Vic as Folken? Yes! Yes! Yes! Awesome casting. If you've heard his Broly, you know he can do deep voices, but that's not the point. The point is that he also has some smoothness in his voice. This will be good. I hope it is. I need to hear the dub in order to make judgement, but this is awesome news. Vic is a top voice actor.

Don't Vic, dislike doing the Broly voice since it's a killer on his throat? But that's a story for another day. ANYWAYS! It's cool to see Vic in another funimation dub. I've met him a few times at Supa Nova Perth and he always says that he wants to get onboard for the big projects like when Attack on Titan came out. And I think it's been a while since we've heard him do a main role in a funimation dub? (what I know). So it's good to hear him as Folken. I enjoy Vic's work. |

Ha, I can't believe people here are happy about this. Folken is supposed to be menacing, and I'm sorry but Vic's voice isn't the least bit menacing to me. I can't have imagined a much worse casting choice than this for Folken I think honestly. Actually, yes I could, but still, he's far from what I had hoped for. This just makes me a little less sad I decided to drop my pledge; although, it was mainly for other reasons that I did so.

Yeah, I might pass on this altogether. Funimation, when you license an important classic like Vision of Escaflowne, maybe take it seriously. Escaflowne isn't a joke. You had the potential to go big with this, put in only your Grade A talents. You squandered it to do a partial Fullmetal Alchemist cast reunion, and most of them aren't even the good performers in FMA (Vic Mignogna is completely incapable of proper emotional dimension and Paul Dobson on his worst day is better).
You made so much head way in the dubbing field, too, but these are not the casting decisions a serious dub studio or a competent director would make. Funimation should be better than this. Between this and the laughable crowdfunding for this project, I may have to rethink the admiration I was gaining for them. I'm sure Clinkenbeard, Tipton, and some of the others will do just fine. But much of this cast just shows that Funimation thinks they can get away with anything. {Edit}: Watch the soap boxing please. You've been making your opinions on their dubs felt quite enough lately across the forums. I removed the last comment for that reason. ~ Psycho 101 |

As long as it's got the Japanese track. But really, those few extra minutes that make up the "directors cut" only affect a few episodes. Going for an entire new redub is just overkill, same with losing the older dub on the episodes that aren't going to be changed at all.
At least we won't have to go through this nonsense for Outlaw Star, whenever that happens. But when that does happen, then what? There's no more big expensive 90s Sunrise series to exploit. They're not going to give prestige releases to Betterman, Gasaraki, Crest of the Stars, Infinite Ryvius, or Brain Powerd (probably because Sunrise hasn't either.) |

I have a feeling you would find something bad no matter who they picked to play these roles. Since you seem to know a lot then tell me who you would realistically pick to plqy the roles?. As in people Funimation routinely uses for their dubs these day. I would actually like to know. I dont particularly mind who they have picked for the roles because I wanted Kirby Morrow and Kelly Sheridan back myself. |

I don't know, man. I just can't get excited about this dub. I WAS excited about it when it was first announced, but when they started announcing the cast (namely Sonny Strait as ADR Director AND Allen Schezar), my excitement began to wane, to the point where I've pretty much lost interest. I really want this dub to be great, but it doesn't FEEL like it's going to be. Instead, it feels like this dub is being directed by committee, and for a big project like this, it shouldn't feel this way. But maybe they're putting their efforts more towards a sure-fire shonen hit My Hero Academia than an oldie like Escaflowne. It sure feels that way.
Maybe it'll surprise me when it releases, but until then, I'm not gonna hold my breath. Wake me up when it comes out. I'm going to bed. |

While I understand, some of the scepticism, it's not all that uncommon for actor-directors to cast themselves as a major character in the show they're directing, though. Chris Bevins, Mike McFarland and Caitlin Glass have all done this at least once. And in most of those instances, the risk paid off. And I think the recent Bahamut dub was pretty, good, actually- easily Sonny's best directorial effort to date, so I'm fairly optimistic.
Maybe Sonny will surprise us with his range- I think a lot of us are too used to him playing humourous/quirky characters to associate him with someone like Allen. |

It's not my job to cast these things well, it's theirs. I don't have their resources. But from the Funimation talent pool I'm aware of, I'd probably get Jason Liebrecht as Van, Alexis Tipton as Hitomi instead of Merle, who would be played by Monica Rial, and somebody like Chuck Huber or J. Michael Tatum to play Folken. Ian Sinclair could play Allen and Josh Grell or Greg Ayres could be Dilandau. These aren't exactly adventurous choices, I realize. I know I wouldn't have chosen Sonny Strait as director. I would have given it to Christopher Bevins. |

It's a good thing they didn't get Turn A Gundam, since that would of meant either no release or another Kickstarter(unlike Escaflowne that has a niche appeal) for double the amount of money. |

I'll give this dub a chance. It can't be worse than the Ocean dub. But if I have to stick to the Japanese subs that's fine with me. I've been sticking to them these last 13 years since I first saw Escaflowne.
Now still trying to decide if I want to stick to the Kickstarter Edition or switch to the Collector's edition. |

For all the talk of redubbing, it's easy to forget that before this Kickstarter project, Funi's has redubbed very few shows/franchises that they've rescued from another company: Tokyopop's Initial D and 4Kids' One Piece. Not that there aren't others that could've used it, like Love Hina and (speaking of which!) Crest of the Stars. Though I don't expect or demand them to put that kind of effort in -- just keeping some of these older shows that weren't megahits back in the day in print is good enough imo. It's nice that Sunrise has cut deals to keep just about all of their previously-R1-released TV series (minus Brigadoon and Zone of the Enders) in print, now if only they'd send the dang materials out already...
