I'm still slightly confused. He's making both a full-length movie and a VR short film? Did the movie already have it's own Kickstarter? Did it succeed? I don't even recall hearing about that beyond the initial "we plan to do a Kickstarter in the future."

Here is the link. The concept art looks decent to really nice, while there 3D models make it look like it is full of fan service in or comparable to the new Ninja Gaiden games (Ayane, Rachael...). Character names seem to reference the Sengoku period of Japan. The facial expressions on the 3D models look awkward and terrible. They reference the main character's virginity as being an important plot element, making it seem like ecchi, but they never confirm it. Overall, I am very confused by it but don't care enough to figure it out.

As it is, the Kickstarter is going to fail miserably. I'm not backing and am not interested, mostly because of the fanservice.

So the way I understand it, his idea here is to make a one-minute proof of concept film for Dai Shogun VR. That's what this kickstarter is for. If there's demand for it, he wants to eventually do the entire series.

It's kinda like that Dragon's Lair kickstarter a while back, although this would be a fully-functional VR demo (albeit one minute long).

Thanks, Zac! Your explaining is so good to see it!

The original Daishogun anime falls into ecchi category, so all the fanservice stuff aren't new.

1 minute long isn't very appealing even though it's 360 VR or whatever. Just my personal opinion though.

It is really difficult to be successful in kick starter. But I do love his work and of course his passion. At least he is trying, challenging, and hoping from his depth. That really touched me and fair enough to make me support him.
And this interview is so amazing.

Agreed. That was a really nice interview.

Even though Kickstarter is not going to make it I'm kind of glad I backed it to show a bit of support earlier when it went up since it sounded interesting and I'll probably eventually have one of the VR headsets had it made it, and since I'd still like to see a CG reboot of the series like that teaser they showed.

I had actually glossed over the part in the Kickstarter pitch where it was stated that the $200,000 was to create something that was just one minute long. I had already thought it rather brazen that they had such a high crowdfunding goal for a series which no large contingent of fans appeared to particularly be massive fans of such that there was heavy anticipation for more, which can only be viewed by the very small amount of people who own VR headsets, but the extra details revealed in this interview really explain why the funding hasn't significantly increased.

I mean, not only is it just one minute long, but it's a one minute re-versioning of a scene in the first episode, aka the one episode that the few people who even deigned to try this series out saw and decided "nope, not continuing this." Plus, "the robot only works if they're virgins, but all the girls want to bang this guy, CRAZY HUH?!" does not sound like the sort of concept that traditional modern anime production would hesitate to make. In fact, were I the sort of person who uses "anime" as a pejorative adjective (as seen across the Internet), I would read that sentence and say "that sure is ANIME as heck, all right!"

What he should have done is make a Kickstarter for more Cat Shit One. I would back that in a heartbeat.

Plus - in addition to not a complete product, limited VR headsets and so on - this is the 4th anime kickstarter in a row. I know my wallet is already feeling the burn from Escaflowne, Riding Bean and Skip Beat - so one more thing? Yeah, not in the budget.

Thanks for putting this in perspective! I have no idea what the original Daishogun anime was about, so this Kickstarter and anime were completely out of context for me. Part of his problem might be communicating this Kickstarter to people who don't know the original.

Kickstarters normally need a decent fan community to work. I don't know if he had that.
