I say we should accept this fellow's words of atonement. Indeed, he managed to make a pun out of the situation. All that remains for him to do is to pay the sum of $9001 in damages to the affected parties. |

I dont want to be reminded of that horrific movie. Dragon Ball is something you simply cant make a live action movie out of it. Where do you even start with it? Goku's younger years? Or just flash backs about those years? And start off with Piccolo or even Frieza? But that makes no sense. Dragon Ball isnt something that can be proper translated to a live action movie. High quality TV series with movies, maybe. BUT IF YOU FREAKING DECIDE TO MAKE A MOVIE DONT FREAKING MAKE THINGS UP!

I know I'm in the vast minority, but Dragonball: Evolution is one of my favorite guilty pleasures. I'm well aware why the fans hate it, and the writer's explanation for how it turned out the way it did certainly explains a lot--but I actually watched this movie a handful of times and I believe it to be charming in its own right, for both the wrong and the right reasons, and it has some genuine funny moments. The actors have said they had a lot of fun doing this movie, and I think it really shows off of the screen. It's also interesting that it was made by the production company of Stephen Chow, the guy who brought us Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle. Know that I'm not necessarily calling it "good" by any means, but who says that a movie has to technically be good to still be enjoyable? I know, again, vast minority, but I think I'll always lightly defend this movie, and let the writer know that at least I appreciate it and wish him luck on his future projects.

Why apologize? The movie was a fun romp. A good way to spend 90 minutes, and not the hours and hours of episodes.
Speed Racer was fun too. |

I thought the movie was pretty bad, but I don't think the guy has anything to apologise about, nor do I think he should get hatemail for it either.

While it's not good-good like Speed Racer (which seems to be punished more for the fact that Indy crushed it at the box office, that "eww, the trailer looks funny!", that kids didn't know that a little kid and a chimp actually were in the original cartoon, and that's assuming they saw the movie at all), there were a lot of forgiveable mistakes with Evolution that had NOTHING TO DO with Ben Ramsey. When screenwriters say "It was a paycheck!" when they come in at the last phase in the script-doctoring, often for a movie that has to be rushed into production to avoid losing legal rights (like Fox's F4 movie), they MEAN it, as the hired screenwriter is usually literally the last to know what's wrong. In DB:E's case, it was the last mutated eleventh-hour version of Fox's original plan to cash in on 00's DBZ craze and make a movie before Warner could--Apparently thinking the series began and ended with the Raditz and Namek arcs, and promising a linked-trilogy "Epic fighting saga to rival LOTR". Yeah, can you guess why they were interested? We got teen Goku for the same reason we did in the HK film--7-yo. martial-arts stars are hard to come by, and Goku didn't fight Piccolo in the series until his teen years at the end of DB:Classic, thus providing a good plot excuse to hire a post-pubescent actor and build the Tournament Arena. The stars had little idea what they were getting into, and yeah, did have fun--Emmy Rossum had watched just little enough of the show to have a good grasp on Bulma's temper, but Chow Yun-Fat confessed he'd never seen the show, was told only that Roshi was a "legendary retired master", and thought he had to play him straight, although a little goofy in a Hawaiian shirt. Probably the same reason Ernie Hudson insisted on getting in on it, thinking he was going to do a Bruce Lee film. The whole "Ancient Piccolo theory?", including Goku's school professor refusing to believe it, came from a messier early script that was loaded down with updated DB:C tribute cameos--including Emperor Pilaf, Shuu, and even Sunow--and the hired-screenwriter's job was just to thin it down to a sensible 90 minute explanation without confusing the heck out of the poor gaijin audience. The fact that Ramsey got enough hatemail--as if it's HIS FAULT, like Shyamalan's ego insisting on doing Last Airbender himself (and usually mentioned in the same sentence)--is just plain danged unfair, and he's more owed an apology than deserving to give one. It's in the exact same category as George Lucas thinking he had to apologize to Star Wars fans who roll on the floor cult-guffawing over fan-hate cliche' gags about the Holiday Special, when he didn't write or produce it, and only took the job of licensing a property because he thought they were going to do something sensible with it...And now around his neck, like an albatross, the Goofy Fanboy-Cliche' Gag was hung. |

When you're makIng a live action adaptation of something you're kind of going to have to make things up or change them around especially if it's something that wouldn't work within the medium do to the impracticality of it or something else. |

For people who say he doesn't have to apologize, keep in mind, he wasn't trying to make a good movie. He was trying to make money. This wasn't a misled attempt at making something great. This was a "well, I'm gonna make money either way. Why try?". He deserves to apologize, but whether or not hatemail is warranted... that's a different subject.
