My copy of this set arrived yesterday, and I look forward to watching it. I've only seen the first few episodes so far, but I was quite impressed by the visuals. A big deciding factor on whether I stuck with the show was how well the CG worked, and even that turned out better than I expected. Like the review said, there are spots where it sticks out, but Garo seems to have done as well, if not better, than most tv series when it comes to CG.

I enjoyed my original viewing of the anime on FUNi's website in Japanese, and I enjoyed my viewing of the first 12 episodes in English on the Blu Rays.

Garo is a great franchise overall. The low budget but fun first series of the live action series was a big hit, and the series got to self-fund after that, as we currently watch the sixth live action series (that's not counting the dozen or so movies, the six episode Zero: Black Blood miniseries, or the upcoming Zero TV series).

Makai Knights fighting Horrors is something fun to see when in the right hands and when the horrors play on the morality of man and their negative karma.

Still not sure why FUNi calls Makai Priests Makai Alchemists, but hey, it does sound cool.

I hope FUNimation gets the rights to the live action series and starts releasing it here.

This is one of my favorites from last year, and I'm glad it got a dub and release. I'm enjoying a rewatch with the dub right now, and I'll probably pick up the blu rays eventually Very Happy

I got my copy of this yesterday as well. I checked it out first on Funi's site and I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It's fun, the designs are great, and the Englsih dub has a charm to it. And thankfully you don't need to be familiar with the Garo franchise at all to enjoy this anime, so IMO it works great as a stand-alone.

It's silly to say, but the only thing that kind of bugged me about the anime was that spoiler[Leon ends up sleeping with Ema.] Not because of the age difference, but cause she always came off as more of Leon's mother or even sister-figure than anything. Though given Leon's mother issues I guess I should have expected it. It's minor and didn't kill the series for me, but it's one of the little things I didn't like.

A small suggestion to the reviewer: not everyone (myself included) knows what "tokusatsu" means. If you are using a Japanese word that people might have to google, give a quick translation in the review.

It's kind of wonky in this case, really. Tokusatsu is usually associated with Rangers and Riders but Garo doesn't fit into that catergory at all. The Garo franchise is completely aimed at adults and has a lot of stuff you don't associate with the genre like graphic violence, nudity, actual fight choregraphy.

That wouldn't be useful, because "tokusatsu" literally means "special effects/filming". In short, it's the genre of film/TV that cover everything from Super Sentai (a.k.a. Power Rangers) to Kamen Rider to Ultraman to even Godzilla & Gamera. I'm sure some people (can't vouch for anyone on this forum, though) would take offense to an adult series like Garo being compared directly to something like Super Sentai, though.

Essentially, tokusatsu (or toku, for short) has come to be like the words anime, manga, or kaiju in that they've become loanwords to an extent.

I... actually liked it. I mean, you NEVER get to see that sort of thing in most anime (on multiple levels), and the scene itself was pretty well done. Vague spoilers: spoiler[It didn't come off as creepy or weird to me, which is easily could have, given the age difference. It was very clear that Leon had grown up a lot over the series. And they did a good job establishing that yea, these two both have traumatic pasts and it kinda makes sense that it would bring them closer. ]

Also, Ema never really struck me as a "mom" type figure anyway (and if Leon projected that onto her, that's his problem). If she did, it's maybe only because Sex Dad was so lax abut parenting in contrast.

I'm also really glad spoiler[Ema got to survive the series. I love her.] Because the alternative would have been lame.

Lord Geo has it correct. Tokusatsu as a term really has nothing to do with a show's target demographic, it just so happens that the most commonly produced ones are aimed at the younger audiences.

I also agree with the idea that translating tokusatsu serves little more than explaining what anime means. The English speaking tokusatsu fandom has grown large enough that it works as a loan word.

Nice to see the first "Garo" anime getting the attention it deserves. I appreciated how they used the freedom of animation to do a setting they probably could have never pulled off on the limited budgets of the live action shows. A shame that kind of ambition didn't carry over to the second anime series.

Looking forward to catching up with Leon, Alphonse, et al in the movie that's coming soon. It hits Japanese theaters in just a couple of weeks from now.

I thought the first 12 episodes of the show was really solid fun and the CG really didn't bother me so much. I liked that they tried to change it up a bit with adding a little Spanish flavor to the series and that there was a consequence to Leon spoiler[losing his cool (lots of destruction for the capital)]. On the other hand, the second half of the show I didn't care for as much and for me it took a bit of a tumble.
