In the mid-'80s, the Voltes V compilation movie was released on home video and aired on TV as a mini series here in Brazil, around the same time we were going through a "tokusatsu boom" thanks to the success of Juspion, Changeman and other Toei productions. I remember not only enjoying it, but being very frustrated with its non-ending. As I recall, the heroes were about to destroy the bad guys' fortress, but gave up once they found out their father was trapped inside of it. I wish they had licensed the entire TV series instead.

Also, I appreciate learning a bit more about Tadao Nagahama. I guess his perfectionism and penchant for making last-minute changes to scripts and storyboards must have played a part in his firing from The Rose of Versailles.

Thanks for the article. I enjoyed Voltes V when I watched it twenty years ago, and the Philippines experience with it is something that I have read about before but always enjoy seeing discussed. Thanks for using the original spelling of buncombe, just like the county it's named for too.

I JUST knew that the Zardoz thing will be brought up(my mind being scarred from my curiosity...) Razz

Interesting and rather nice thing to know about Nagahama. If I were to take it at face value and not add any dark underbelly whatever, and not counting his methods that understandably became controversial with his peers, I can see that he is a rather cool guy; not arrogant and entitled towards the fans or budding creators unlike some *people* I know. I guess his life ended too soon because he was just too cool for this earth.

About time too that this was brought up, since the specter of the Marcos return to power has just recently loomed over us here in the Philippines, no thanks to the millenials that were disconnected from the Voltes generation and had been totally brainwashed by the lies of the Marcos propagandists and supporters that they'd rather have another dictator in power than enjoy the democracy that their forbears had fought for. Now that's sad, and frightening.

Voltes V was teased to be coming back on air in the Philippines, apparently with a new Tagalog dub Very Happy So that's, I'm not sure, the fourth or fifth PH dub?

And some trivia for the fujoshi crowd: "Apparently, early fans of shonen'ai and tanbi hated anime because it wasn't pretty. But that changed when Daimos and Voltes V came out." [X] Just look at Prince Zardoz...

Hearing about this made me envious as I grew up in South Korea, where suffice to say, the government embargoed, "Koreanized," or worse, allowed the domestic animation industry to imitate anime.

My exposure to the Nagahama trilogy was through the Super Robot Wars games, starting with Alpha. Despite appearing together, Combattler V, Voltes Five, and Daimos didn't meddle too much into each other's plots until it was deemed convenient by the developers, since they've usually been good about finding ways to merge different IPs into an overarching story.

Voltes V definitely has an interesting history indeed I'll have to check out the dub version one day for myself, Also your right that new Voltron series doesn't look like crap unlike Voltron Force a show that is much better off forgotten. Smile

This might be my favorite Mike Toole Show column ever, thanks to the political angle with Ferdinand Marcos (who, IIRC, also ordered that all videogames in the country be smashed).

This show bombed in Japan, but was massive in the Philippines.

Well, him dying also didn't help. Nagahama died two days before episode 14 aired in Japan, though he technically directed up through episode 18; I'm going to guess some people shadow directed those last four episodes to finish them.

Sadly, Tadao Nagahama isn't all too well known here in North America. Since he died in 1980, a lot of his legacy is more in setting up what we now tend to think of as the usual, with other people (like Yoshiyuki Tomino) getting more of the credit. Sure, Tomino introduced the real robot side of the mecha genre & showcased that you could tell real war stories in the medium, but it was Nagahama's focus on telling actual stories with truly relatable characters via his "Robot Romance Trilogy" that helped make Mobile Suit Gundam possible in the first place. Hell, I don't think there's any other anime director whose work legitimately helped overthrow a dictator in real life; that's how important Nagaham is in the history of anime. In fact, I remember when Nozomi first put out Rose of Versailles those couple of years ago, & the seeming general consensus from reviews was that one had to simply get through the Nagahama-directed episodes in order to get to the "really good stuff" that Osamu Dezaki directed. To most of the reviewers, Tadao Nagahama was just some relative nobody compared to the legendary Osamu Dezaki.

One can only imagine what else Nagahama could have continued doing had he not passed away.

Voltron Force wasn't that bad to me. It did introduce some neat ideas (switching the central lion to give Voltron a new weapon was creative) and ended on a notorious cliffhanger (main new guy Daniel turned twisted from having Haggarium in him). I'm sure the main reason everyone hated it was because it wasn't anime style to them and that's the only reason they gave. Rolling Eyes

I find it horribly funny that if we draw something originally Japanese in a western art style, then we get accused of desecrating their anime or whatever. But if the Japanese draw something of ours in their style, like say that god awful Marvel Disk Wars, they get a free pass because they're Japan. And yet no one can see how terrible the character designs are; Hulk's eyes look absolutely retarded in that stupid toy show and yet everyone is okay with it. Let's not even talk about those generically designed anime kids that summon the Avengers on top of everything else, which is just a bigger joke than anything. Favoritism sure is a nasty disease.

Interesting, I didn't know he died when the show was still airing. I assume some significant time must have passed between his exit and the airing of the episodes he supervised, because I've seen Dezaki say in many interviews that he got hired to work on The Rose of Versailles because things weren't working out with Nagahama, and not because of his health.

Watching the show, I didn't find the switch between directors all that noticeable. The fact that Shingo Araki was the animation director on every single episode certainly helped in keeping the visuals consistent throughout, and while the show's tone got less shojo manga-like under Dezaki, it felt natural because the French Revolution was just about to get under way in the story.

No, people didn't like it because it was horribly written, horribly animated, with horrible characters, and horrible plot. No wonder they decided to revamp it.

And Disk Wars was leagues, LEAGUES above the piece of junk known as Avengers Assemble.

As for the topic, isn't it amazing how shows that weren't huge in their home can become staples for other nations? I know Grendizer was the first big mecha in France, Mazinger in Mexico, etc.

It amuses me to no end when people praise the weeb garbage known as Disk Wars. That show is utter garbage with a completely stupid kids and their monsters type plot, only with Marvel superheroes being the Pokémon. It's so generically painful to look at and I couldn't even stomach the first episode because the Marvel superheroes were speaking Japanese. Just awful. At least Avengers Assemble doesn't make nonsense like this up. Leagues, LEAGUES above? Haha, yeah no.

Avengers Assemble had an episode where Hulk and Thor fought over cookies made by Falcon's mom.

...Yeah.
