meh! I would've rated it better, honestly. TU is a fun series to watch, honestly, and the concept is pretty interesting. The story holds together well, up until the final episodes where it shows it was truly an anime made from a manga and ended well before the manga did, with an ending that truly feels rushed. HOWEVER, up until that point, it was an enjoyable series to watch, and I think it's a series more deserving of a B rather than a C.
However, that is just my opinion. |

The ANN reviewers are fairly conservative in giving out high grades. If you look at their past reviews you can see they rarely give out A's and hardly ever give A+'s. It's not a bad system, it would be less informative if they gave out A's like penny candies.

I dunno... having seen the whole thing, I'd say the problem with Tokyo Underground is that it always feels like it wants to go somewhere - and get a little edgy - but never crosses the line of mediocrity in the story.
I like the OP and ED music themes though... and seeing as there wasn't any commentary on the music, I wonder what caused Carlo to give a C- to it. |

Yeah, the OP and ED were done pretty well. It's been a while, but I don't remember if the soundtrack was any good or not.

I just saw this first disk last night and I wondered why I had never heard basically anything about this show.
Sure, it is straight up shounen action as stated, but that doesn't make it bad. I was surprised basically as I thought it was be a lot worse since I had never heard any buzz about this title at all. Even this review was wrote over a year ago, and no comments... and I giggled when reading the comparison to Flame of Recca, because as I watched I thought, yeah, people who like Flame of Recca (which I do) will like this... and people who like YuYu Hakusho will like Flame of Recca, but oddly, I would not think to say to someone who likes YuYu to watch this, but the progression is natural... The animation was much better than I expected and the girls are adorable. The characters are all well done, and if you don't mind formulatic shows (which I know a lot of anime viewers don't) this seems so far to be a decent anime in my opinion. I hope the rest doesn't drop below what the first disk promises at least or that would certainly explain why I never heard any buzz about it.

Finished this anime last month. I enjoyed it, it was quirky and pretty cool. The thing is, this anime read my mind when, during the early episode, I thought to myself, "It would be cool to have dragons in this anime." Instantly, the characters mention there are dragons that plan to be released by the Company. I'm like, "Sweet! It read my mind!" I was hooked, if not only for the elemental powers and interesting concept.
I'm disappointed they never actually showed the ron coming out of the gate. I really wanted to see some dragons! |

I liked TU, Hell I bought the boxed set based on the first opening, Jonetsu, alone. That said it had some major shortcomings.
This series really stood out as an example of how Honeyed violence can ruin a series. Many of Rumina's sword strikes should have cleaved enemies clean in half or into many tiny pieces, yet they just pass out, not dead, magically. That really gets in the way of the latter part of the series, as it becomes harder and harder to feel anything epic is really taking place when everyone just gets knocked out and magically gets back up later. Where is the sense of danger or imminent doom when nobody ever dies? This might not have been as noticable if it weren't for spoiler[the opening where Seki tosses Rumina around and kills him within a few moments, and of course is conveniently brought back to life. The one person, other then the two main villains to die, and he's magically brought right back to life.] Plus they never explored Pyron, and while I can guess who and what he was spoiler[(second generation elemental user sent by the government to infiltrate the underground and destroy it as well as any traces of the past experiments)] I felt cheated that they just left those dangling hints there was far more to him and the situation then was explained. There were some good points, I liked the culture and how they developed the underground, how they were weaving the story in, and also the sub plot about spoiler[Kashin going insane with grief after having to kill his own sister.] This is probably if anything why the flaws and inconsistencies stand out so much here. It could have been so much better. :-/ |
