As someone who never found this show funny I apprishiate that you looked back at the show with a more criticle eye. Some people would put on the nostalgia goggles and praise it a comedy gold.

I never watched the Anime I did, however, read almost all the volumes of the original Manga and the criticisms of the Anime are just equally true. In short yes the best criticism of this would be that it is horribly dated and that it falls into the problem of using references to pop culture as the joke and punchline in and of itself.

Now that the rose-colored glasses are off (new prescription), one can finally see this as the poor man's Azumanga Daioh.
I made the mistake long ago to get this series on DVD. At first I didn't get any of the humor whatsoever. All I thought of it was a bunch of girls talking about food. A few pithy comments here and there, but nothing struck me as gold. Over time its popularity grew in the fan base and I tried my darndest to resist as it started getting released in the states. Eventually, peer pressure kicked in. People were using this for AMV's, I imagined that I needed to get on the bandwagon if I had any chance of competing with the new editors. So I bought the DVDs one by one, all six sets. By DVD 6 I realized my mistake. I HATED this anime. Nothing in it was attainable for a good AMV. Everything and everyone in it was static. Nothing truly happened. The only redeeming feature was the OP and Haruhi references. And everyone else had already done that. Better. Never before had buyer's remorse taken a worse tole on me, and I've played the Virtual Boy! So for three years I made no AMV's; I had zero ambitions for creativity. It took the healing power of Squid Girl to cure my procrastination. But I still have those DVD's to remind me to remain selective whenever I choose an anime and to maintain caution when a fad opens up, Luckily streaming is coming close to making physical media obsolete. At least to me. Anyway, the fact that this Azumanga Diaoh knockoff garnered a Blu-Ray re-release and that the highly superior Nichijou has yet to be picked up is injustice. |

I personally really enjoyed the series, I enjoyed the artstyle and the back and forth banter I found amusing even if it didn't go anywhere at times, plus a great dub just make it a fun watch. I didn't get the Haruhi references though as I haven't seen that show but once the Haruhi Bluray Premium edition releases next month I plan to finally watch that series then plan to rewatch Lucky Star on bluray

No. That might have been a product of Bandai deciding the show wasn't selling as well as they wanted back when they had it. I know they stopped doing limited editions by the time the last volume or two came out because those weren't selling well. Personally, I enjoyed this show quite a bit, but I will fully agree that it doesn't match up with later projects, like K-On. I think my biggest gripe was that at times it almost comes off as product placement for Haruhi. Sure, it references other shows, but there is so much Haruhi in it that it gets a bit distracting. I'll also agree that the upscaling for the blu-ray didn't do the show many favors since the lines for things like characters' arms come out pretty jagged. I'd recommend watching the DVD version instead. I've actually been watching several slice of life shows years after they came out thanks to license rescues, (Lucky Star, K-on, Azumanga, etc.) and it is proving to be an interesting experience. When they first came out, these types of shows didn't have much to hook me, but now, I'm finding them quite entertaining. As someone who originally watched the show when it was first released on DVD singles from Bandai, I have to disagree with Nick here. I'm currently going back through it an episode at a time, and I find that I'm enjoying it even more than I did the first time. A lot of the references and humor that went over my head when I first watched it almost 10 years ago I suddenly understand now. True, some of it's a bit outdated, but I'm honestly rather surprised just how much of it is still up-to-date. Not to mention that I'm a big fan of the dub and I think that it has aged very well.
So yeah, YMMV, but I personally still find it a lot of fun. 
Not to sound like someone wearing the ol' "rose-tinted glasses", but I guess in Lucky Star's case, you just sorta "had to be there."

while I find the review itslef to be VERY VERY fair, there are two omissions that really annoy me in it: first and less important, there's this sort of new generation thing at around half the series which at least makes the show feel a little bit more fresher, tho probably I gave it more importance than it had because it had even more yuri undertones.second, no mention of the outros/endings ? sometimes, ebsides lucky channel, that's what ade me brave thru the end of the episode, the diffferent anime songs that would get covers in the ending/karaoke segment, tho, later, sore wa seiyu did that better.

Huh. I even tried to get into Azumanga Daioh after seeing so many people preaching just how superior it was (much like a certain comment above), but I tried about five episodes of it and couldn't get into it at all. Looking back, it was probably because I couldn't relate to any of the characters very well. Also, I didn't care much for slice-of-life shows or pure comedies--and still don't. But, I think that's exactly why Lucky Star actually appealed to me, of all people. It wasn't trying to be super-duper wacky hijinks all the time and featured likeable characters I can still relate to even to this day, so I could look past the "slice-of-life" part since it struck that perfect chord in me that had me wanting to be right there alongside characters like Konata or Kagami. As someone who watched the DVD singles and later bought- and sold- the Anime Legends collection, this review very much covers all my complaints with the series- both when I first watched it, 3 out of 5 on the Netflix rating system where even Doki Doki School Hours earned a four- and when I bought the AL version just to see why I didn't find it funny.
To sum up that experience: I stopped watching after episode 1's "Where's the punchline?!" punchline... which is later than the half episode choco coronet bit... well, more than a bit, it's a lot.... as I could have stopped there too. It got better, especially after they expanded the cast, can't really say if it ever got good. I love Nichijou, I love K-On, I love comedy but here, only the Lucky Channel stuff is remotely funny but that's more in comparison to the main series than by itself as half the joke is the guy's the actor from Haruhi Suzumiya. You had to be there for that one? |

This show always mostly have good critics and reviews, but this Nick Creamer guy hates it all of a sudden it seems nobody likes it either. And also...

Bandai did not dub it for their release. A Funimation dub would have been significant enough that I would expect the review to mention it. So the OVA is probably, unfortunately, still not dubbed. This review seemed much too harsh to me. Humor is subjective, and fortunately for me I enjoyed the humor in Lucky Star much more than the reviewer did. I will admit though that it took three tries for me to get past the first episode and the infamous chocolate cornet scene. But after that it was almost all good. I even enjoyed the first episode during future viewings, probably because I knew the characters. I never considered the dated references to be a problem. I was not familiar with most of them when I first watched the show but I was able to understand enough from the context to get the jokes. I was tempted to say that Lucky Star has held up very well for me, but I realize now that it has probably been about a year since I last watched it. But since I enjoyed it so much then, seven years after first seeing it, I expect that I will still like it when I watch it again. Which I should do soon. For me the characters are always the most important part of any show, and I really like the characters in Lucky Star. I have fun watching them, whatever they are doing. |

I can see where Lucky Star isn't for everyone. It's like watching 22 minutes of Seinfeld and some jokes can go over people's heads.
Lucky Star wasn't a dealbreaker when I saw the first episode, but as I continued the show got more interesting.
