Question, did FUNimation secure the video release materials for this series? Particularly I'm wondering about the last episode, which was horribly unfinished when it aired on TV in Japan.

This series started well enough and then fell apart like somebody tried to glue a stale cookie back together with canola oil

I had the same feelings, a great idea with fumbling execution in art and writing.
The biggest disappointment for me was the spoiler[ use of a classical villain. In the beginning I thought this would go the route of freedom vs. security, but then it just heads to standard bad guys vs. good guys.]

I get that you can watch this uninitiated, but if I wanted to watch the first series or the 2008 series to get my nose wet, any recommendations on which of the two and how much to watch (or particular episodes)?

Also, DVD only? :/

I don't think it matters which you see, and since there isn't really an ongoing storyline to the franchise prior to this entry, you probably only need to see a handful of episodes to pick up on most/all of the references.

I [ersonally just watched some of the 2008 series and got all the context I think needed for this one.

Will pick this up directly from Funi at NYCC and get a discount. Only seen a little bit of it but it seems fun. Loved Nurse Witch Kumugi R so hopefully it's more of the same from Tatsunoko.

this is starting to become a pattern now and it have me really concerned.

back in the 2000's just like funi ADV was turning in almost all of their licensed series with an english dub then afterwards from out of nowhere, they develop a pattern where their doing more sub releases than dub releases before going six feet under. the same with media blasters (which is hanging on barely by a thread) and bandai ent which is also deceased.

and considering their giving series sub only releases which by all reason should have easily gotten an english dub (i.e buddy complex), it definitely have me worried that funi might end up going down the same fate as those other companies which is why their not dubbing some series as of late and if they do, they doing it via kickstarter program.

The sub releases are still much more the exception than the rule, though, and something that Funi probably should have started doing years earlier than they did; after all, I can't imagine that all of the series that they have dubbed over the years have actually been good enough sellers to merit dubs. I doubt there's anything to worry about in this case.

I have a very odd relationship with this series. The beginning is phenomenal and the d ding is great, it's just dragged down by the middle section that's pretty awful. I love the characters and interactions and the themes it's just those middle episodes tank hard. I almost wish it was just a 8 episode OVA or something because I'll probably be skipping those episodes on rewatches.

Yeah, that's what I was referring to with the "tanked really hard" comment in the review. Razz
