Honetly, passive watchers piss me off. If you're watching anime WATCH IT. I don't even know anyone who watches passive. And if yoy watch passive, you have no business talking or complaining about the story.

As for Berserk... the Japanese HATE it. The westerner majority hates it.

I don't passively watch any anime, even if I'm rewatching something. If I'm going to be taking the time out of my day to watch it, then I feel like I owe it to myself and the show to actually pay attention. If I find myself getting bored with it, then I switch to something else, be it a different show, or a different activity.

I haven't listened to the cast yet, but I have to ask, just what do you mean by a "passive watcher"??

As usual the Super Nerds (or what remains of them Wink) deliver. I especially had fun with your Char's Counterattack and Gundam conversation. And I suppose I should watch Redline; people keep saying great stuff about it.

I very rarely passively watch anime. The only kind of anime I can do so with are works that I'm not enjoying, but not to the extent that I want to drop them. Though that's not always the case, sometimes I still want to take in the badness without distraction.

I think it helps that I started out watching anime on an iPod touch when I was a teenager. The screen was small enough that if I turned my focus anywhere else, I wouldn't be able to see what was going on, and it's not like I could open up another tab to surf the web while the show was running. Likewise, the need for earbuds meant I couldn't leave the room and still hear what was happening like you can when you watch something on TV. I didn't get a laptop of my own until I had been watching anime for 2 years, so I think the habit of giving an anime my full attention just stuck with me.

Great show as always

I'll passively watch an anime that is on my B list if it has a dub. I can watch something an craft. No it doesn't get a 100% of my attention but I also feel like I don't want to or don't need to give it a 100% of it. The stuff I care about I will very much actively watch though.

I enjoyed Mike's Worse Anime Ever panel, it is always good stuff. Somehow this year at Otakon I managed to be busy the whole time and yet seemed not to do as much stuff as I would normally do. It was odd. The heat was killer though. I think we were spoiled with quite a few nice years. I'm remembering back to the early aughts and how hot it would be. But it is killer when you are wearing a cosplay with 4 layers. Every anime character should just be shorts and a t-shirt lol.

I'm still so-so on the move to DC mainly because DC is a more expensive city than Baltimore. But I am interested to see just how much bigger the show will be. DC does have more than chain restaurants though, might have to take the metro to some of them but there are a lot of great places to eat.

And while my Baltimore Aquarium story has nothing to do with Otakon I just feel like sharing it. Many years ago I was dating a guy who surprised me with a day trip. Which turned out to be the Baltimore Aquarium. I'd always wanted to go and so when we got there I was super excited. We are inside checking out the fish, when a tiny minnow jumps out and back into the water. My boyfriend jumped back like three feet. And I'm like "Your not afraid of fish, are you?" Turns out he was. Totally had a crazy irrational fear of fish (sharks and seahorses were fine though). I had talked about wanting to go so much he took me anyway. So, it was a nice, yet very weird day.

It's been a couple hours since the article went up and the regular RSS feed has the episode, but iTunes doesn't. Someone maybe go kick Tim Cook or something? Thanks.

EDIT: Never mind, looks like it's available now.

While it does have a few flaws, Char's Counterattack is one of my favorite anime movies. I've always enjoyed Tomino's direction (his writing is another thing), and I appreciate that the movie doesn't hold your hand every step of the way, even if it makes it impenetrable to newcomers. I remember the original DVD release over here coming with a booklet by Mark Simmons of Ultimate Mark/Gundam Unofficial fame (he did another for the Zeta Gundam DVD release). I still own it. I'll probably double-dip for this Blu-Ray at some point, though, because it looks gorgeous. I think Zac may be missing a bit of the context of the movie given the significance of the entries between the original series and CCA.

I have no use for Gundam Build Fighters. Unless the characters are actually piloting the mecha, I have zero interest. They're just playing a Skylanders-style plug-in game. There's too much between the viewer and the characters.

Redline is too fast-paced and kinetic to be boring. I can't imagine falling asleep over anything Takeshi Koike is involved in, whether it's Redline or Lupin.

Imagine you are doing something while the anime is playing in the background and you only look up when something exciting happens or it pulls your attention. The only time I've ever done that is with a few live-action movies that I've seen so many times that I only look up for a favorite scene. Most of the time I never do that and certainly not for anime. I don't like having my attention split like that in general, if I'm going to sit down to watch something I like to get immersed in it otherwise I feel like I'm wasting time that I've set aside.

I think its visually spectacular, but empty. Its all about the visuals and the excitement of racing, which seems to be what they were going for, but there's very little in the way of story. The first race was the best for me and I almost don't feel like I have to watch anything beyond that. I don't feel quite as orgasmic about it like Zach does, but it should probably be in most people's collections just for how great it looks and besides the Blu-ray has been on sale in the past for pretty cheap. Just go for it.

Mob Psycho: I thought the first 2 episodes were weak, and I considered dropping it but I think its gotten stronger and I'm now feeling entertained.

Berserk: The last 2 episodes some of the visuals have gotten better and the story is a little tighter. Better doesn't mean good however, I still think it looks poor which is better than what it first started out as.

Re: Passive watching: People can do what they want of course, but I sort of question why bother watching if the show is that uninteresting.

I come to the topic more through Asian drama fandom where people do the same thing (esp. since the series tend to run longer than the average anime). Some "viewers" (?) even mention not just half-watching but straight-up fastfowarding through "boring" parts (at which point I wouldn't even consider you to have watched the show but rather a self-edited highlight reel). That's an extreme example but, again, if the "good parts" are so few & far between and the show is mostly unengaging, why not just switch shows? There's no shortage of stuff to check out, especially nowadays. I think one of the best things a fan of any medium can do is accept that they don't have to finish everything they started-- no one's going to give you a prize for doing it so don't throw good time after bad, to adapt the phrase.

P.S. I've sat through shows with friends-- shows that were mutually chosen mind you, not being "inflicted" on them by me-- who were staring at their phones for minutes of (subtitled) dialogue at a time, who then proceeded to ask me how X thing happened when it was literally just shown, onscreen, how X happened. Very aggravating and probably related to the pet peeve I have about it.

I try to avoid passive watching (aside from OP/ED unless they're good cause I don't really need to see them 12 times). But I have caught myself doing so while trying to finish some stuff on a phone game that I was playing around on during the OP, especially when I'm crunched for time Embarassed . But usually when I watch anime, I watch anime. Another exception is long recap sequences in Shonen titles, especially if that material was recapped many many times (Yeah you Naruto and the episode of One Piece two weeks or so ago). I also passive watched the shit out of many of the episodes of Jiraiya's Ninja Scrolls.

I for one am glad Otakon is moving to DC cause I just moved to Northern Virginia three months ago and I could just take the Metro there if I wanted to. Hopefully my work schedule and finances line up next year that I can finally go, as I have been meaning to for a couple years now. I now have no reason to want to go to Baltimore aside from passing through though. Man, the people who came from out of the area are lucky. We've been in it for weeks. I usually work the closing shift, and when I leave work at night it's still over 80 and humid. I was in DC the weekend of Otakon and I really regret not bringing a water bottle.

Glad to see Mike and Daryl enjoying this season more than Zac and Jacob.

OK, now I get it. Mad Shocked

I, personally, have no capacity to passive watch anything. I find that even if I'm not interested in a show, if a TV is playing in the room I'm in that I can't concentrate on anything else. I've long suspected that this is a skill developed by people who grew up or otherwise spent long times in an environment where they couldn't get away from the TV.

As far as anime is concerned, or for that matter any show you are watching for entertainment, why would you want to passively watch? For that matter, if a show is subtitled how is that even possible? If the show no longer is entertaining just stop. It is not like it is a school assignment. If people are forcing themselves to watch something just because it is "must see", I can see why they suffer burnout.

I can see why someone like Zac would want to passively watch some shows. Because of his position he has to be familiar with shows he wouldn't watch otherwise. I don't think that passive watching is something a reviewer could do and make an honest review though.

@poonk

People obsessively fiddling with their phones when they are in a social setting is a problem in itself. We may have to add "passive socializing" as a problem. I suspect this is only going to get worse.
