About time! Didn't want to shell out over $500 for the imported blu-ray set.

Now this is tempting. Angelic Layer's one of my "pet" shows, and I wouldn't mind upgrading my old ADV discs to BD, if the picture quality is improved enough to make it worthwhile. It was an early digipaint production, though, so I'll probably wait for some feedback on how it actually looks before making a decision.

I am pleasantly surprised that Sentai thinks that there is enough interest in Angelic Layer to justify a Blu-ray release.

I will not be buying it because the old ADV discs that I have are good enough for me, but it is always nice to see some new attention given to one of my old favorites.

Does anyone know if this is a remaster, or did they take the old DVD masters and remix them to HD 720P? I would love to get the set, as I long ago sold my DVDs, but if the quality isn't a true HD, then I'm afraid it might look crappy on my HD TV setup.

Is this release going to include the dub audio tracks from the original release? I love Angelic Layer but I already have the ye olde ADV DVDs and the video quality of those are still pretty good, so I don't know that I'm going to double dip on it. But Angelic Layer is a great classic and an under-rated Bones anime, so I'm glad to see it on Blu Ray.

A cursory glance at my list of AmazonPrime preorders reveals that CLAMP has at least five volumes coming out in the US between now and the end of January '17, so perhaps Sentai thinks that that particular audience is still alive and kicking.

Good question here. I'll start by saying that 720p is not really "HD". So if it's just an upscale to 720, that would be a waste of money for everyone that buys it, and for whoever produced it.

and to CCTakato, Angelic Layer isn't really underrated. I guess if you're talking to newer generations, maybe. But it was extremely loved about 10-12 years ago when ADV released it.

CCTakato, yes, it will include the English dub. That was mentioned in the press release. The Sentai Selects DVD re-release last year also included the original English dub, so there's no reason not to put it on the BD too.

Being unavailable on DVD or streaming for most of the time from 2008-2015 will do that to a show. I belong to a club on MAL that publicizes and promotes unpopular anime, and most of our own club members haven't even seen Angelic Layer, never mind the people I'm usually recommending it to.

Doubt I'll get the Blu-Ray - I have the original ADV release with the art box - but it's nice that it's being offered as an option. Smile

I think the more important question is whether the show still has something to offer that you can't really get today? Or whether it does something better than other shows? So long as I feel it does one of these things, I'll be thrilled every time it comes back.

I certainly can't say for sure that there's never been another show like it (or another show that does what it does, but better), but it's got great themes and messaging and still looks pretty decent. Plus it's one of the few CLAMP anime that took the manga and was practically able to improve on it.

So yeah... I'll be picking it up.

The Japanese release was upscaled, as expected from an early digipaint show.

It's said to be one of the better looking releases though, see here.

Here's hoping that Sentai will not lock the subtitle and audio streams for this release.

Not a bad upscale; the purpose of it being more to keep it watchable on modern TVs than the benefits of bringing out the detail and grain when analog anime is remastered.

Hmm. Angelic Layer is one of the few shows I didn't finish (that was at the start of my "I think I'll take a break from anime for several years" period). I might pick this one up. Does the show end at/in a decent place, or is it one of those "get the rest of the story in the manga" shows (which was a big part of my taking a break).

I had hoped that the Chuibyo 2nd season would be released in such a way that it would fit into the chipboard box with the 1st season (replacing the box filled with trinkets), similar to the way the Sailor Moon BluRay releases have been done by Viz. But it looks like it's getting it's own chipboard box instead. Oh well, I suppose it's worth the extra space on the shelf, although that's starting to be a concern.

Little Busters EX is an instant buy, of course.

The anime ends rather conclusively and satisfactorily from what I remember. I've never read the manga, but from what I remember hearing a long time ago there's some big differences between the anime and manga (and some were of the opinion that the anime was better).
