I loved this show when I watched it on disc recently. Coming from a small town, and dealing with people that are never happy no matter if I do what they want, made this show far more repeatable than most anime I've watched in quite some time.

Interesting to put the emphasis on Handa, I think most people would consider Naru the heart of the show.

Handa's the one with the character arc.

And a spinoff!

The Beach episode with clear sexual innuendo using kids should be a negative point.
I remember taking a whole point from this show giving just how stupidly unnecessary was that segment with the sea cucumber.

Not counting with that however, it was a very solid and heartwarming show overall. Patiently waiting a possible season 2.

Not convinced that was supposed to be sexual innuendo. The censor pixelation is a common joke about things supposedly so ugly they can't be shown on TV (see also bad cooking and facial wounds suffered from slapstick) and Miwa telling Naru she'd be an adult if she touched it was the former using a sure-fire way to manipulate the latter in order to tease.

Sometimes a sea cucumber is just a sea cucumber.

That's just you, pixelate a sea cucumber exploding their censored sticky white insides in the hands of underaged girls while a more mature one say something like "you are becoming an adult if you touch it like that" is something I see very often (and ONLY) in ecchi series. This one certainly wasn't one in the first place, so it was even worst imo

You must actually be very naive not to see anything wrong with that LOL

Honestly, you need to watch more anime than ecchi, because Fronzel is right - pixelating 'ugly' things (like a sea cucumber, or worms, or insects, or animal scat) is pretty common. Like he said, your interpretation is just you.

Ecchi is literally the genre I watch the less and despise the most lol
I actually watched too much anime, which is exactly why I know very well what were they going for in that scene (very out of place to say the least)

I'd say you are the one who need to watch more stuff in here tbh

But Naru is the heart of the show and, I think, the reason why most people return to it. She brings light to every moment she's on screen. I couldn't care less about Handa's arc as an artist. It's his arc as a person, tied closely to Naru, that makes me care about him at all. In the end of the manga I believe he will adopt her. Her grandfather is obviously making encouraging hints in that direction. Their relationship is the highlight of the show and manga.

Why is everyone claiming to know what "most people" think these days? Rolling Eyes

Naru may be the heart of the show but Handa is definitely its center because without him there simply wouldn't be a show...or a very different kind of show at least with "quirky village people doing quirky village people things", but it's their interaction with Handa which makes the show so special and funny.

both shows are not very similar to me. baraka is comedy with a bit of drama, while biyori goes more into the moe-ish slice of life terrain. besides biyori has its charms, but it's partially pretty awful. for example, the episode where the two girls go out together, but the other one doesn't recognize her because of her mature outfit is more idiotic than funny... i found the humor mostly working much better in barakamon.

Maybe because it would, I think, be the only sex joke in the entire series. The show doesn't even take the opportunity to put the teenage characters in swimsuits in that episode; they're wearing tracksuits.

Sea Cucumber intestines are white, by the way.

I'm very aware of the color (it's the reason why so many sexual jokes are made using them haha).

But exactly, without it, this is pretty much A-OK, the whole content, which is why I found it to be so unnecessary (it's one of the anime I selected to watch with my family, so, I kinda needed to ignore the whole existence of it to evade uncomfortable moments).
