Sorry Lynzee, but Felt and Emilia want the same thing, equality. Their methods only are likely to differ and I didn't hear Felt espouse anything like Communism. She just wants a government inclusive of all the people, not ruled by the "elite". Unfortunately, if the "Wise Men" are politically connected, they will make sure Felt loses. Sort of reminds me of our current election choices (or maybe Priscilla and Anastasia?). Felt forever!!!

It doesn't matter which girl wins. She'll be saved from herself by a man who'll take care of everything that needs to be done, whether she wants it or not. But don't worry, she'll come to love it in the end.

Re Zero's author would vote for Crusch, despite being an Emila fan.
(He mentioned this at a Taiwanese authograph session he was attending as guest of honour.)

PS. Crusch's reasons for being a candidate is explained in the side stories.
spoiler[She was childhood friends with Prince Fourier of the Luginican royal family, and she wants to make his dying wish come true. When Fourier and the royals died, she was angry the Sage's Council cared more about the dragon's guidance than the royals as people, and thus rejects the guidance in favour of a fairer meritocratic society.]

Sure Felt and Emilia want the same thing @Hiroki not Takuya. It's just Felt's methods make it more likely that you get murdered in the streets because you had something your neighbor wanted. There are reasons why anarchy has negative connotations. Even the most anti-government libertarian (not that many or most are necessarily so) would say "Whoa whoa whoa. At the very least the government ought to enforce property rights and keep order" to Felt's anarchy. That calculus could change once you add in the chance of getting murdered by the witch cult or the witch herself but hopefully Subaru and company takes care of that.

Of the more likely candidates, I'll take Crusch's meritocracy. She seems the most qualified candidate otherwise.

@Chaccide I don't think Crusch, Anastasia, or Priscilla will let any man "save" them. Don't know about Emilia, though she probably does need some help.

spoiler[I could do without the kicking and totalitarianism/absolute monarchy of Priscilla but otherwise...]

I'd support Emilia over Felt if it weren't for history, remember what happened with Pres. Carter? That is what happens when a weak democrat is in charge. I'd bet Felt is pragmatic enough that she wouldn't let crime run rampant despite her speech, I think she'd be more Libertarian. Felt, Felt, Felt...Anyway, most governmental theories and predictions break down in the face of real human nature and not the theoretical constructs of the liberal, meritocracy would work until some less than capable person with a passion for power and politics got a chance and then you have Totalitarianism again (because they are good at politics and rounding up powerful supporters like the knights).

It doesnt matter what system is put in place anywhere. Within years humanity would twist and exploit it so much you wouldnt recognize it anymore.

I for one would rather see Felt or Crusch. A persons worth is directly tied to what they can do to improve themselves and their situation. Feeding the poor is nice and all but handouts do nothing but ensure their survival and make them lax in actually DOING something to improve themselves. Why put in effort to elevate yourself when your guaranteed at least a basic amount of whats necessary? There are exceptions to that as there is everything though.

As much as i want to say Emilia, it seems like she relies too much on other people for any real political change to take effect. At least in the anime, it's difficult to see what she's done for herself on her own merits, besides being intelligent and well-educated, as well as philanthropic.

I'd say the best option would be Crusch, at least while Crusch is in charge of it. Crusch seems to have integrity and good character, so i could see such a meritocracy working. If this system was passed to other less qualified individuals, rampant abuse could happen. I'm not clear how the politics of this world work; there doesn't seem to be a lame-duck princess these candidates are replacing. How often are princesses chosen? Does their system of governance and legislature remain until the next one? If they have children, do they inherit the position? None of this is revealed in the anime.

So, i'd say that as long as Crusch is in charge of it, she'd be the best choice.

Surprised this hasn't been posted yet. I laughed quite hard.

All joke aside, every political discussion always come back to the question of "do you give resource to those who need it the most or those who can make best use of them". I don't think this is the right place to get into intense political discussion, but they do say that "the road to hell is paved with good intention".

Personally, I couldn't say no to Felt.
Though, going by the events so far, Crusch is probably the one on the lead and who seems more clear headed. Although Anastasia probably already has something planned out of the deal she had with the White Whale hunting.

So the one who is in more mystery, which actually surprised me, since I though we would get to see her more than the others, is Priscilla who could probably make some kind of move soon. Same could be said for Felt, but I do believe that she's still "studying" the position she's in now.

As for Emilia... I don't even know if she has any idea of what she really could do.

Simply putting it, I have more fun looking at the current results rather than trying to guess the final poll. But I do guess that Crusch is the one who will be selected in the end... but as long as there is Felt...

It's not quite fair to characterize Emilia as "democracy" when as noted her concern is equality. Whether that is a classical or modern liberalism of political equality, or a more materialistic or socialistic conception, it would certainly require some restrictions on democracy. After all, if the modern world has shown weaknesses in meritocracy, it has certainly shown that there are weaknesses in leaving everything up to democracy without agreed upon restrictions on what a majority can do.

This is a ridiculous simplification of things especially re: Emilia. Aside from Priscilla, based ONLY on what we "know" Emilia is actually the WORST candidate, for one simple reason:

Emilia is flat out naive "optimism". Emilia WANTS "equality" but she is way too easily dissuaded. Emilia WANTS to save the villagers, but then when they push back and say they don't like her she gets disappointed and retreats. I do think her INTENTIONS are noble, but unlike Crusch, Felt & Anastasia, she hasn't really proven to have the will to affect REAL change (on the scale that a leader would need to do). She's willing to help an individual, which is great, but when the opposition (that WILL be there) speaks against her, she shrinks away and lets things run their course.

Her path does NOT lead to "equality" it leads entirely to "mob rule". (which I guess would debatably be a true democracy) In that sense, much like her end goal is similar to Felt's, the results would probably not be THAT far off either.

At the very least leaders of democracies can be held accountable for their actions, though in some cases not as effectively as one would hope. Whatever you think of Carter, he was not reelected when the people thought he wasn't doing a good job and power was peacefully handed over to the next guy, i.e. no civil war broke out. With anarchy, there are no institutions, laws, or norms to prevent anyone, the leader or otherwise, from doing whatever they want or hold them accountable. There is nothing stopping Felt from just turning to totalitarianism with her control of the army or the state devolving into a bunch of warlords presiding over their territories. What you said at the end applies just as much to anarchy as any other political theory. As Churchill said (but not first apparently) Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others.

This is one reason that despite the almost fetishization of outsiders in American politics, true outsiders rarely make good presidents/congresspeople as they usually rely on people who are more knowledgeable of the process and policies, who are inevitably insiders, or otherwise just screw things up because they don't actually know what they are doing.

In universe, it depends on how much the "wise council" think they could manipulate the Government after it is implemented.
Priscilla would be a good candidate if they believe her haughtiness is just a circumstantial ruse, Crusch would be the primary runner up as she seems to be a "business as usual" type of candidate the "issue" would be if the wise men feel they could control the situation better with latter candidates, in the middle of the pack would be Anastasia where capital would be "king" savvy business dealers and go getters would benefit most from eventual black market dealings, Felt of all things would likely be chosen over Emilia as anyone still standing after the purge could recreate the kingdom in the aftermath, Emilia in comparison to the others sounds like a complete dreamer at the time even without considering personal prejudice against her.
