People today are obsessed with texting/twitter/social media. See South Park's current season currently roasting all those social media users. A movie about emojis is depressingly obvious.

Don't care what the masses do, they're emoticons. They were emoticons on early BBS. They were emoticons on early instant messengers (eg, ICQ/MSN/AOL) .They will always be emoticons.

Because, as Themaster2000 pointed out, Sony is so damn desperate for a hit.
To which I would add, "You have no IDEA... Shocked "

For studios today, it's all about Franchise:
What do you think of when you hear "Warner"?--Batman, Harry Potter, Bugs Bunny, LOTR? Universal continues to push the Monsters and the Minions in our face when they don't have a Fast & Furious movie. If Fox can't get the X-Men going, they just go back and make more Apes and Die Hard. And I wouldn't even bother asking what you think of when you hear "Disney/Pixar/Marvel".

Now, besides Godzilla (but then, we're biased, and Warner's got him anyway), what do you think of when you hear "Sony"? If you thought for a while and finally said "Ghostbusters?", well, they tried that. Didn't work out too well. If you were a comics fan and said "Spiderman?", well, that didn't work out either.
They've had more "We're not #2 and Trying Harder, we're #4 and obsessed with knocking the crap out of ourselves" attempts at trying to chase the Big Three blow up in their face more often than Wile E. Coyote, and like Wile E., a few falls and explosions only make them try that much harder.

And, of course, every Big Three franchise has to have a marketable Animated Icon to remind us of the studio from a young age, but Sony Animation still hasn't decided yet whether their "animated house icon" is the Smurfs or the Adam Sandler Dracula. You see the problem they're in.

Ironic you'd say that here since it's, well, a Japanese thing.
