Oscar which will be lost to a Disney movie, as always. Remember Chihiro my friend, it won against Monsters inc, the only thing that bothered me is that Miyazaki didn't attend the ceremony, i wonder if that offended the academy and its voters.

My question is if these kinds of stories will make a comeback in anime next few seasons seeing as how well this movie did and that it could be stretched out in to a series and played on TV. I wonder if companies are taking notice and planning their future endeavors with something similar as Your Name.

It's rare when a Japanese or any animated film from another country wins. It's mostly Disney, simply because they are Disney. lol

Spirited Away was also partially handled by Disney though, and it was Disney that convinced enough people to allow it to not be totally dismissed by the Academy. Without backing from a major Hollywood studio with deep pockets, your name. has no chance.

Well, if you're going to put it in Best Animated Film. I think it'll do better in Best Foreign Film.

I'm pretty sure animated films aren't eligible for anything but the Best Animated Feautre award.

Besides, all this ho-hum "not backed by a big Hollywood studio means it will be dismissed" talk completely ignores the fact that indie darlings GKIDS have been dominating the Best Animated Feature category with their animated films over the past half decade or so. And the majority of those films are much more obscure than something like Your Name, of whom's existence anyone who even remotely follows Japanese animation is aware of. Heck, they're currently distributing Miss Hokusai, a much less popular anime. I wouldn't be surprised if that got a nomination, given its fair share of critical acclaim.

Spirited Away, although it was a 2001 film in Japan, was nominated as a 2002 animated film (due to its American release date) and won the Best Animated Feature Oscar in 2003 over Lilo & Stitch, Treasure Planet, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, and Ice Age.

Monsters, Inc. was a 2001 film and lost the inaugural Best Animated Feature Oscar in 2002 to Shrek (the other nominated film was Jimmy Neutron).

You're probably thinking of the Annie Awards where Monsters, Inc. was nominated for 2002 because it was released in early November 2001 just past the Annie's cut-off date, which isn't the end of the year for some reason, but lost that award to Spirited Away.

Incidentally, Monsters, Inc. is still my favourite animated film amongst those that I've named in this post, although that's neither here nor there.

I figured what gets nominated is up to the Academy itself, as well as how many submissions they get for each category. If animated films are only found within Best Animated Feature, then it simply means the Academy put it there.

As for GKids able to nominate stuff, by then, Studio Ghibli had been able to get the sort of credibility needed to be nominated, which got started in the first place by Disney's backing. GKids, I think, simply continued that legacy. You rarely ever see anything outside of the major Hollywood studios nominated for anything except Short Film and Foreign Film, even though plenty of good stuff gets released outside of the Hollywood and Ghibli (and Laika) system. And the reason behind it, I'm sure, is because the people in the Academy are within this system and take very few things seriously outside of it.

The BIG thing is that your name. has to be given a chance by the voters. The things working against it are that 1) it's animated (and we've had accounts of voters who really don't want to watch animated films and just give their FYCs of animated films to other people), 2) it's anime (during my time in Hollywood, anime was this thing that exists but people have an unwritten rule to ignore, in the same category as video games), 3) Makoto Shinkai is not a name they recognize, and 4) it currently hasn't met the requirements to be nominated. Perhaps 5) they have to be convinced this is not a film strictly for children.

Again, this is ignoring all of the non-Ghibli, more obscure foreign films that have also been nominated under GKIDS' name. These include Song of the Sea, Ernest and Celestine, and the most recent Boy and the World. Ghibli films have only comprised a few of the company's Oscar nominations. In fact, their first ever was for the Irish The Secret of Kells.

I'm pretty sure that the films that are nominated are picked by industry professionals, i.e. people who are directly involved with the creation of animated films, and thus people who have a deep respect for the medium. This is why such obscure and non-Hollywood films can even get nominated in the first place. But these same people aren't apart of the final voting for overall best picture, so that explains the Disney favoritism.

Ah, I see what you mean then. I didn't realize GKids managed to get non-Ghibli films nominated. The Ghibli ones are the only ones I really hear about.

What I had in mind was the 2012 voting for Best Animated Picture, where one anonymous voter said, for [i]Variety[/] magazine, he literally just spun his phone on a desk like a roulette wheel to decide which one to vote for, as he had seen none of them and didn't care to see any of them. Do they not do that sort of thing anymore? (Logically, negative word-of-mouth from articles like that should get the Academy changing their structure.)

I do know the Annie Awards ARE voted by people who are really passionate about animated works though.

You should consider checking out their non-Ghibli stuff. The majority of them tend to be pretty great. Song of the Sea, in particular, is simply astounding.

Indeed, though they're not without their fair share of criticisms from fans either from what I've heard. Though I'd be less reliable to pin down what those concerns are, exactly.

Yeah, I am interested in seeing some of those things--I've heard of them. I just didn't know GKids handled them.
