I saw it over the weekend and loved it. Very cool special effects and the score was awe-inspiring. It was also a surprisingly funny film. Me and my friend (as well as the entire audience) got quite a few big laughs throughout. And it was definitely just the right amount of dark and the feeling of despair was palpable, as is to be expected from Hideaki Anno. I'm glad to have experienced a genuine Toho Godzilla film on the big screen and to have contributed to the box office receipts. Overall I liked Shin Godzilla much more than the 2014 Legendary version, though I still relatively enjoyed that one (I'm more excited for the sequel, tbh).

Pretty impressive for a sub only screening than again it is Godzilla and he has a pretty big fan base in the US. Smile

This is great news. I didn't get to see it, but I do plan on watching it at some point.

Despite the theater I saw it in starting the movie 20 minutes late, leaving the lights on 10 minutes into the movie, refusing to center the screen which left the subtitles hanging off onto the wall, and cutting off the movie right as the credits started, I enjoyed seeing it.

I didn't enjoy explaining Anno's political commentary to my friends, but I definitely enjoyed seeing it played out in the film. I hope Toho lets Anno direct another one (if he wants to).

I'm pretty sure he's said he has no interest in doing another one, especially since he's dedicating his time to the final Evangelion film now (and god knows we don't need another indefinite delay on that). And he was more interested in seeing someone else tackle a sequel. I loved his take on the franchise, but I'd probably prefer that be the case as well, he created a unique vision with Shin, now's the chance for someone else to shine. He resurrected the character and his relevance in Japan, so I'm excited to see where they take the franchise next, with presumably a more action heavy "vs" plotline.

Also, that sucks about your less than ideal theater experience. Was it an art house place or a larger mainstream chain theater? Mine was at a Digiplex Cinema and overall it was pretty solid, aside from a roughly five minute delay before the film started (which felt so much longer than it was given my anticipation). I had to make quite the drive to get there, so an ordeal similar to yours would have really pissed me off.

I hope that whomever does the next Godzilla film builds on what he's done, then. I watched Evangelion 3.0 in theaters *looks at watch* 10,000 years ago, and was desperately hoping we'd get 4.44 in 2015/2016 along with a US re-release of the original series on bluray for its anniversary . . . my how things have changed.

It was a larger chain theater, 50 minutes from my town. It's been hit and miss with them, really. DBZ: Resurrection F was fine, but there was a similar experience with Battle of Gods, and the same on-and-off between Wolf Children, GITS Arise, and others. I put up with it because it beats driving 3 hours to either of the two next-closest theaters that ever show anime/foreign films. There's another city of about equal distance that has a theater that's just started hosting Funimation films, so I'll probably be going there next time.
