The combat sounds very similar to Ni No Kuni incredibly shallow system (although it sounds thankfully free of dumb AI companion), although it should be able to avoid most of its egregious fault like having confusing stats (Moon beat star for some reason and the familiar would have random attribute) and boring character progression (yay my familiar is evolving... into an identical version but with a color swap). The customization sounds nice, but without a challenge what's the point? If I could just customization all the creatures by just randomly selecting skill/bonus and still win everything, it all seems pointless. Sad Are there at least some bonus challenge or some scoring system in battle, and do health/mana automatically restore between fight or do I need to actually play at least somewhat conservatively?

Playing the English release with Japanese voices on would be such a waste.

Waste how?

I've been loving the game. Ever since XIII-2 I've wanted a Final Fantasy version of Dragon Quest monsters. I'd prefer it without the stack up mechanic but it's still enjoyable overall once you unlock monsters for all sizes.

The only bonus challenge in battle is when you switch from turn-based to active mode. Health and mana don't restore between fights but mana--called AP here--regenerates each turn in battle. Gil also comes super fast, so it's easy to carry a ton of potions.

My review's largely positive, but straight up--if you want a challenge, this isn't the game for you.

I beg to differ. Auto-battle just repeats the previous command you put in. So, if it is just attack and you're just plowing through enemies, that's fine, but do not forget that A) the objective of the game is to catch mirages, B) get through the story, and C) not die. It does not select the best skills for every situation. It does not heal you when you're low on health. It does not auto-catch anything. If anything, it acts like you have a controller (turbo) to press X continuously.

The monster catching in this game is pretty much like Pokemon, except each prism is designated for each monster and you cannot run out because you failed to catch the monster. You get a designated prism to each monster the first time you encounter them. Also, you cannot catch monsters being controlled by other characters (kind of like other trainers in Pokemon). Each monster has its own method of being caught, some of which don't even require being hurt, but healed instead.

It's not so much about wanting a challenge as it's about wanting the customization aspect to have a point, otherwise it feel like a puzzle game with complex mechanic but where every puzzle can be quickly cleared by just randomly hitting button.
