I watched Wake Up Girls as it aired streaming and while I liked it at the time it is something I barely remember now except as a thing that existed and I kind of liked it. Of course in the lead up to the release of the series it didn't help that people on the internet were saying this was another chance for Yutaka Yamamoto to "save" Anime.Wich after Fractal (wich I liked) I was surprised people still thought this was possible unless it was some kind of "ironic" meme.
For me what took me out of the series was the music it;s an Idol anime and the music should be memorable and honestly it's not that memorable and at best this series can be considered a noble failure. |

Its Mayu not Shiho And for me I 50% liked and 50% didn't like it mostly due to art and pacing issues as mentioned |

While I agree that the artistry could be better, the honesty aspect is the thing I really enjoyed about Wake Up Girls. I liked that they didn't sugarcoat the idol business, and actually gave you a reason to root for them.

Is there supposed to be something wrong with that image that you posted? I will probably not be watching Wake Up, Girls! anytime soon, but it does seem to be a show that I might like so I am curious about it. I am interested in how dramatic it gets. I prefer less drama and more comedy in this type of show. |

I have to agree that it is no better than third in its genre. Its honesty about the industry is commendable, but that isn't enough to make it better than Love Live or Idolm@ster, not even close to be frank. The art and animation especially is inferior to those two, though I wouldn't say it is bad per se. It wasn't a bad series but there are better iterations of the genre and if you aren't trying to see everything in the genre, it is probably fine to pass on it.

The problem with WuG are the 2 sequel movies that round up the story which are not even available/licensed for the West and are better written then the tv-series tbh. We saw with the tv-series maybe 60% of the overall story but missing the rest. I really hope Sentai picks up the movies in the future.

I prefer more plot, less "How do we become idols?" "This way!" in my idolatry so the only ones that work for me was that earlier Idolm@ster show... yes, the one with the giant mechs... and AKB0048 which took the less savory elements of the racket and ran it into the ground by postulating that not only do you have to lose your identity in order to become "one of us" but your entire physical presence if you're "lucky" enough to become one of the great Center Novas. And did I mention the whole group was run by a Lovecraftian Elder God who made decisions... and lyrics... as heavenly proclamations and had his own system of priests? I can't still figure out how the show was officially produced with the group's approval. "It's satire." "Oh, ok... {What's satire?}{"I don't know but it sounds delicious!"} What interests me about Wake Up, Girls is its director Yamamoto who did Haruhi's "Live Alive" and self destructed on Lucky Star. I'm not curious enough to want to watch it but it is fascinating to follow his career in a "what project is he ruining now?" sort of way. Fractale, gives me the hives just thinking about it... |

When it comes to idol shows WUG is such an odd duck. I really loved it as a fan of real life idols which Cinderella project and love live have little to nothing in common with.
Love live has by far the best music and the worst characters. Cinderella project has... Anzu? I guess? I can't remember any of the songs though. WUG I didn't particularly dislike anyone and had a couple favorites and overall I liked the songs even if there were far fewer if them. |

I'm a big fan of WUG as an idol group so I've been following their activities and news since the show, but looking back the show wasn't something that could stand by itself. It was a good supplement to the group, but the ending of the tv series was flat. From what I heard about the movies you probably need to finish with the two movies to really come to a conclusion with this title.
Frankly speaking, WUG Zoo was more fun. I've been meaning to watch the movies because I like the theme songs but yeah, western release is slim. I'll just buy the JP Bluray at this point. |

The path to oblivion along which Scorching Ping Pong Girls marched was not fully inevitable, I shall grant. We can envisage similar shows in which the characters themselves were the focus of the early episodes, rather than just their sporting characteristics and club rankings, as was the case here. If one is unacquainted with a pair of racketeers, it is notably difficult to invest oneself in a match between them when its only dramatic locus is the matter of who wins. Sports can tell stories, but endearing stories cannot consist of mere sports. |

Wow. I had actually written Snow White off; With all of the Yona releases and not a pre-order option in sight for Snow White, I thought that maybe it had tanked in streaming. Glad to see that's not the case.
Now, Viz just needs to get on the manga. |

Wake Up, Girls! is probably my favorite idol show because of its honesty. I could never really take Idolm@ster or Love Live seriously, or get fully immersed in anything they were selling, because I was just left with this nagging annoyance at how sugarcoated and fake everything was. I didn't really have any problems connecting with WUG's characters, or its story, as it was a pretty straightforward under dog plot featuring cute girls who were putting up with and trying to overcome an industry that is downright terrible to everyone within it. I Thought it nicely balanced itself between scorning the industry, and being optimistic and "gambatte" about it's girls and their future. I would have liked it more if it had production values and character designs that could really compete with Idolm@ster and Love Live, but it felt like it was full of passion and heart, and there isn't really anything else out there like it.
