Glad to hear it's going to be publicized this year. The people who organized this are some friends of mine. For a first-year con, we had great attendance last year.

If you happen to be in the Atlanta area during this, you should really make it a point to check it out.

Dude, FREE? Shocked And it's in Atlanta!

...

I actually live a couple of hours south of Orlando, but I can get to Atlanta in about... a day, I think. What are they planning for it? Events-wise and showings-wise, I mean.

How are they supporting it, out of curiousity? They have vendors or advertisers, or is it out of pocket?

Are they going to have an artists' alley thing? I like those...

If I can make it to Atlanta and afford a night in a hotel (or a nicely-secured parking garage, mwahaha), maybe I can get myself and a friend or two up over there for it. Hell, for FREE... daaang, you know?

By the way, there's a con called I think YasumiCon? In Miami each fall, I THINK. I mean, I remember this much: It begins with a 'y', it was mentioned in Anime Insider, it's a one-day freebie con, and it was in Miami, Florida.

I'm considering starting a site for listing information on free cons, parties and gatherings for the SF, fantasy and anime/manga/games crowds. If anybody wants to give me some info for it, let me know, and I'll see if I can throw a little something together with it. Wink

Hehe, maybe I could call it FreeCon - the slogan could be "Get your FreeCon!" </cheese>

Actually, I've always wanted to do a free "anime festival" or something. Trouble is, I don't think I could afford to rent a place out, and my home is... um, small, needless to say. Of course, part of me has always wanted to start up an anime cafe/collectables shop/book store/comic shop, even though I know from personal experience that I both abhor working in retail and probably do not have the discipline required to handle money well enough to run a retail/food business like that. Laughing

But still... the "vaguely close to Orlando" area doesn't have a free con that I'm aware of. Though it's pretty cool that there's technically not one but TWO within a day's driving distance from here (the one in Miami and MomoCon).

It took me a sec to realize how the name of the con is a pun. Wink Georgia is, of course, well-known for its peaches... momo means peach (hence why the main character of "Peach Girl" is named Momo!). Cute. Who thought up the name? I like it.

*grin* Most of your questions can be answered by visiting the website (www.momocon.com), but I'll answer the immediate ones for you now.

Of COURSE we'll have an artists alley and dealer's room, filled them up last year. Our prices are cheap because we only charge them what the venue charges us, so we tend to attract smaller dealers that have more of a variety of wares.

Events listings are pretty close to complete on the website, well at least what we have set for now. Our signature events are listed on the press release (like the Gaming Decathalon and Tsukimi Moon Viewing), but we've also got a big-screen karaoke track, AMVs in a full theater, panels, a 200+ game old-and-new-systems console room, a dedicated rhythm gaming room with lots of imports and nifty stuff, lots of showing rooms (anime and live action), game demo groups with free swag. The guests aren't up on the website yet, but most of them are listed in the press release. Last year we had upwards of 30 guests by con time, so expect about the same for this year (hopefully more!). It's a full con, not a mini-con like some people tend to think, we just don't have a con hotel.

Unlike most normal cons which start with a couple grand at least, MomoCon was started with 0 capital (that means we raised all the money for necessities ourself and got a lot for free!). We get the GT Student Center for free through Anime O-Tekku (the anime club), and most of the other stuff was donated or paid for with money from sales of T-Shirts (professionally designed, btw) or food at the con. We actually pulled a small profit for next year, too! Most of our guests are local, so that makes some things easier.

And, yup, Yasumi-con is in Miami. It's the only free con in Florida, to my knowledge. It was this past weekend and I heard it was a blast. The club that runs it are really nice people, we met them at Kunicon Miami last year. If you are going to be at DragonCon, look for the MomoCon table. We'll have a lot more guests and events planned by that time!

Thanks! I'll be sure to visit the site and make a mention of it to my friends. Wink We're already planning to go to JACON together next...

I have to say, I admire the MomoCon guys, being able to bring toghether a free, full-fledged con like that. Very Happy

I will try to see if I can make it to the con. Wink
