I did find this an interesting show to watch - but then the writings of Rampo are not an entirely foreign country to me (albeit in translation, a proviso that has to be made in such situations).

However, I also found the vaguely perverse interplay of the main characters - the pill-popping Akechi, the androgynous Kobayashi, and the straightest of straight men Hashiba - did make for fascinating viewing in its own right. (But then I could happily do without this particular interpretation of the Black Lizard.)

Let's see how well my bank balance survives Christmas!

This show still has one of the best openings I've ever seen

And ED too. Sayuri is a great singer and the visuals were also really well done. Honestly, the visuals in general for this series were really well done - even if animation per se wasn't all that amazing.

Towards the end it definitely became more of a Seiji Kishi series than anything else (just look at Danganronpa 3 or Re:_Hamatora). The theme of understanding one's own place in the rather complex system that is the world is explored in almost every original series he's directed (especially when paired with Makoto Uezu).

I also felt that the series didn't actually need much knowledge of Rampo's works to understand as its own series. Knowledge mattered most if you decided you needed to track down the numerous references, many of which take quite a bit of digging, in order to figure out why they put Rampo's name on it.

OP and ED were also the best of 2015, hands down. The ending animation also really nicely foreshadows the final confrontation, once you realize what it means.

Definitely best ED of 2015. I love listening to "Mikazuki" by Sayuri, such a great song.

Yeah, I was into this series until then end part and then it just lost me. The macguffin that is introduced is just so nonsensical and more you think about it the more your brain hurts. The end part brings the whole series down for me. I would have given it a 7/10 half way through but by the end it was down to a 6.

That requires understanding the subtitle, "Game of Laplace." They don't actually drop the name in the series itself, but "Laplace's demon" is a theoretical construct based around the idea that if you knew the location and momentum of every atom in the universe, you could essentially predict the future.

spoiler[Dark Star (this version, anyway) was essentially that, but for people]. Either you accept that it was created and works or you don't. They can't really go into the mechanics of how it works in the series because it's pure theory, a long pseudo-explanation would just distract from the narrative.

As someone who had no knowledge of the source material I did enjoy the show. There was a lot to take it at some points and it did get confusing but i really enjoyed the story.

I think I'd have to challenge that a bit. I remember him being flustered more than once with Kobayashi. ;p

I'd have to agree with everyone here. I definitely enjoyed it despite my limited knowledge of Rampo's works. Everything I know is based on other Rampo-inspired shows.

The perverse nature of the show definitely added to it. In any other show, it's used as fanservice, but this one definitely utilized it in a thematic way. strong visuals and themes are a decisive selling point. Though I'd strongly advise against watching it for the sensitive person.

Just a shame it never had a beach episode.
