Perceived regression? It couldn't have been more ombious if they faded to black and said "Game over - Bad End" on the screen. Serioulsy... what the hell were the anime writers thinking?

Pretty much this. And worse yet, when you think back - it was all there all along.

Well deserved, since that original ending was... well, let's not talk about it.

I really doesn't do to upset your customers ( fans ) even in Japan. It looks to have been a somewhat costly mistake for this production.

I have a few questions: first, I'm assuming these sets don't have English subtitles, correct? Seccond, do these sets contain the entire series? I.e. they aren't just individual volumes with like 3 or 4 episodes on them?

The price for the non-wall scroll bear box is so reasonable I might order it even though it almost certainly doesn't have engsubs. I've always wanted to own at least one fancy-dancy Jpn TV anime release and this might be my chance...

I would have been fine with the ending had natsu turned to the audience and flipped them the bird.

It even works as a conversation piece. "And this here is the anime that was so badly managed by its staff that it pissed everyone off, and I mean everyone, to the point where I could actually afford to buy the Japanese release due to its price dropping so low." Laughing

Eh, I wasn't thrilled with the ending, either, but it's not like it made me forget a lot of the great stuff that preceded it.

Oh man, Kumamiko. If you look at the series discussion, you could clearly see that Kumamiko was my shit that season! I loved it. But that ending... I can't enjoy any of the scenes knowing THATS what follows. I've tried :/ Poor Machi... She deserved better.

Meh, there have been worse endings. Soul Eater and Oreimo for example - but those were more popular so they could get away with bigger ending travesties. Kumamiko's problem was just communication between the staff and mangaka. Unfortunately, the way it became public and blew up over the web gave Kumamiko a worse reputation than it actually deserved.

I just don't see why they didn't change the ending in the last episode for the box set. It only needed a few minutes of the end changed and it would've been fine. I enjoyed it up until that really dumb ending.

I think the problem wasn't just that the ending was bad, but that it was really cruel, withspoiler[ the cast essentially gaslighting poor Machi in order to trick her into staying in the village with them. She's allowed to believe she was mocked and insulted by a crowd of people, ends up needlessly abandoning her dream, and this is portrayed a good thing, somehow.] It's really messed up and upsetting.

Soul Eater's infamous ending, for comparison, basically just boils down to spoiler[the infamous friendship punch, which is dumb, but it at least respects Maka as the hero and gives her a happy ending.]

Hardly surprising, I think most people expected this to be a light and fluffy show with a mild twist of a talking bear. The first episode gave us that hint of historic bestiality which was a big WTF did they really go there moment. That was just nothing compared to the way the show then absolutely destroys Machi by the end, with cruel and despicable treatment reducing her to a helpless dependent condition.

Seriously, if they gave me money to take a box set away, I'd only take it as far as the nearest bin.

At least dedicated fans of Kumamiko have the chance to buy the show and the extra contents at a very sweet price...

Then again, that won't erase how painfully terribly the ending played out...

However, halfway through the show had already started to drop, basing half of the comedy on abusing Machi's fears (not even in a funny way, just "it's funny because she's scared shitless"). And a sizeable part of the rest was that-guy-whose-name-I-can't-remember-kun cluelessly molesting her.
