I think this review is a fair assessment of the show. Even coming from me who is a major fan of the utapri fandom (games and all), this is a good review from someone who hasn't played the games towards an audience who hasn't played them either.

The series is supported mostly by its relation to the games. This season seemed to stand alone better than others so I'm pretty impressed with it. HEAVENS is an entity that I think they wanted to monetize on, but it didn't pan out (Eiji especially is on my hit list for unintentionally messing with Otoya). The dance CG improved since Revolutions (reminds me a bit of Tsukiuta's dance sequence CG) but I do miss the animated feel for it. The one thing I can state is that I got deja vu from God's Star, QUARTET NIGHT's song. It really felt like I was watching the Maji Love Lives, Utapri's live concert with the seiyuu. They really made the dance number like a jpop concert feel rather than just a regular stage where you watch a group perform. I really appreciated that attention to detail for this season and I'm glad there's mention of new projects in the future.

Why waste your time on a romance anime with no romance???

Although idol shows are a minor guilty pleasure of mine (call me shallow, but there you have it...), I couldn't get past UtaPri's mediocre performances, and dropped it quickly. On the other hand, I was able to get past the cookie-cutter melodrama (and weird merchandising/product placement) in "Dream Festival" because the music was surprisingly well produced. I'm not sure if the difference is whether the voice actors also did the singing, but my general impression is that VAs are seldom expert musicians, and idol shows work best when the voice acting and musical performances are not done by the same talent.

I never understood the thing where they were floating and spinning in space with their arms out.

I really do like a good, guilty reverse harem, and the show is unapologetic in turning Haruka into the ultimate potato, but sometimes, the song sequences just made me cringe this season. Was expecting more but... oh yeah wait. There will be more.
