Do we know the number of screens this had? That seems awfully low. I can't help by wonder if the JP fans are either a little bit tired of having this stretched out so much, or if it just had a really small release. Not that the numbers are horrible, and I'm sure it'll still sell very well on BD, but it's not quite the numbers I would have expected.

Each part seems to be making less than the previous one. Kind of the opposite phenomenon you want to happen with an epic film trilogy. But I'm pretty sure the franchise sells mainly to the Japanese weeb shut-in market, going by the previous films' high BD sales, and not the types who go to the theaters. Still then, why haven't the films been at least performing on par with the first part's box office? All well, the copy of part one I ordered should be arriving in the post tomorrow, and I'm very excited to finally be able to watch it, since it was what convinced me to get into the series in the first place. Very Happy

I think you might be partly right about that. It's likely not a particularly out-going audience in Japan. My only thought as to the decrease between each release is that people might actually be tired of the lacking length of these movies. That's probably more wishful thinking than anything else, but I can't really think of any other reason as to why they would drop like that. Personally, I hate how AoA is releasing them in the US, especially since they are even more expensive then the JP release, and hate the 3 part release in general, but the first two have been utterly fantastic in theaters and I can hardly wait to see the third one, even if I have to pay $210 to own what is essentially just one 3 hour movie.. that's really pretty ridiculous, even by Aniplex standards. Sad

I don't remember the figures for part 1, but I don't think this is a bad result for the first weekend. Keep in mind that part 2 was released in mid-August (one week after Obon). At that time of the year a lot of japanese people take their summer vacation. I think this could have a effect on the number of tickets beeing sold/revenue.

I often wonder how many actual non-otaku see these types of films, perhaps they're bored and nothing looks good so they decide to just watch this random anime film where the auditorium's probably mostly empty. Surely Japanese teens partake in random nights out like that? I know I have plenty of times. But I'm getting way off-track, haha.

And yeah, I feel you on Aniplex's releases. I've already complained about that stuff ad-nauseam (as have many others on these threads), but the fact that even the JP releases are cheaper is frustrating. It would have been nice if they had just waited to release all three as a complete set (which, who knows, maybe they will do sometime in the future). That being said, the quality of the release itself is pretty solid. Nice packaging, even if I think for the price it should have at least been a chipboard, and I was surprised to discover that the soundtrack included is actually the full, complete OST, not just some paltry sampler disc that you usually get with these things, so that was a very pleasant surprise. I just finished watching Part 1 before making this post and it was amazing. Very Happy It was some great, tone-heavy build-up, I just wish it wasn't so short. Sad I can't wait to get my financially irresponsible hands on Part 2 when it gets released.

The first thing I did when I got my copy of part 1 in was to go over to my friend's house to rewatch it. After now seeing it 3 times, it just gets better and better. And part 2 is even better, if you can believe that! Very Happy
I agree, it is a pretty nice release and the content is pretty solid, but yeah, chipboard should have happened for this. Or, in my wildest dreams, maybe a chipboard box to hold all 3 parts! Only in Japan do they get cool things like that though. Sad

And to the first part of your comment, I don't know if Japanese teens do do things like that, considering how much studying they are always doing. Not to mention how extreme curfews and stuff are over there.
