I didn't really care about the Cruncyroll Awards. In general award things do anything for me. Cruncyroll Awards were pretty much exactly what I thought. Every category with Yuri on Ice will win, some choices don't make any sense for the sake of putting in a popular show. I don't agree with a lot of them but whatever. Seriously though, how did Kizanaiver's opening not get nominated?

We've been Amazon customers since 2004 and Prime members for something like the last 7 years. I gave them my take of the issues with Anime Strike and in due course I got a response. Based on the tone of the reply I think the feedback is getting thru to Amazon's Management / Video group and that they may have been a bit surprised by it.

Thank you for the show! GoHands producing a Mighty No. 9 anime would be an endeavour greatly suited to them. I cannot be the only one who was reminded of the contemporary lampoons of said game's promotional material when seeing the screenshots from Hand Shakers.

Well my plan was to watch less stuff and read more in2017 but that didn't happen now including Utena and Rose of Versailles I am watching 23 series best laid plans of mice and men eh. As far as Winter series I liked Amagami SS but honestly I think Seiren is better partially because of the dynamic of the protagonist and the heroine in this arc.

Hand Shakers does look terrible but I've always thought GoHands has good sound direction and music even if everything else looks like an acid trip on fire.

I didn't even bother Tanya the Evil just because I knew the whole concept and it sounded uninteresting and I just didn't bother with it. Unlike Scum's Wish which the premise I found revolting and actively wouldn't watch it will it be good or bad? I don't know as I won't be watching it.

Fuuka feels like it got trapped in a time warp of 90s Shonen romance I also read a 100+ chapters of the Manga and it was pretty much everything I disliked about Suzuka.

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu: Sukeroku Futatabi-hen so far has been fantastic and is my number two of the season with the camera work and shot composition being marvelous. While KonoSuba 2 is exactly the same sort of mean comedy and ugly art I appreciated in the first season and is so far my best of the winter.

I'll keep watching Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid if only because Quetzalcoatl becomes a cast member later on.

Also as a technical note the YouTube video has some odd distortion in the audio at about the 20 minute mark although the MP3 is fine.

I keep talking about my trip but when I was in Japan we did got the Square Enix cafe in Akihabara. We are sitting there are going WTF?! is the game they are advertising? None of us knew. It was School Girls Strikers, and they had gone all out to the exclusion to pretty much everything else in the cafe. It was pretty lame. I saw that there was an anime coming out for it, but needless to say I was not excited for it.

Yep, this season looks very weak. The only two things that I am excited about are the return of Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju and I like how the new season of Blue Exorcist started. Hopefully I will find at least 5 shows that engage me.

As far as the wait between new seasons of shows that become hits, it seems to largely depend on Japan disc sales. One Punch Man was a success, but with its 9k average disc sales, I will be surprised if there is more anime beyond the second season. On the other hand, I expect to see a lot of new anime content from Yuri!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! on Ice over the next 2-3 years because it is a mega hit.

The most disheartening thing about Handshakers,is that people got payed for that quality of work Sad . I wasn't surprised by the Crunchyroll awards reaction, people obviously took way too seriously, when it was just a fun little thing they did. People in general, feel they need to have some validation for what they like, through award shows. Their pointless at the end of the day, just enjoy what you like!

You mention Masumune-san being similar to Mari Okada's mean spirited nature.

The odd thing is that Mari Okada also wrote Toradora and I watched it. I don't recall any real unjustified mean spiritedness from either Ami Kawashima or Taiga Aisaka.

Any idea why Mari Okada became so mean and judgey

Regarding Crunchyroll's anime awards, while it seems kinda silly to bemoan which shows won the popular vote, i think there is a legitimate complaint to be made about the nominations for each category. As CR has access to streaming numbers for these shows, they will have known which shows were likely to draw huge popular support, and should have insured that the most popular series were not nominated for a disproportionate number of categories. This is simple common sense, really.

The Anime Awards' big winner Yuri on Ice for example was nominated for (and won) both best OP and best ED. Why not nominate it for one of these and give a different show a shot at the other? In the animation category, why have YOI, notorious for its troubled production, compete while Occultic;Nine and Sound! Euphonium 2, two of the season's most impressive efforts were not even nominated?

Working in anime seems to do that to people. Besides, have you seen some of the crap she's had to write scripts for?

That is the last thing they should do. While I agree with you concerning your complaint, which also was a problem with American Idol, Crunchyroll would be accused of tampering (cheating) with the results. Which is a much bigger hassle, and bad press.

This is a generic problem with all media that hosts awards shows, based on popular support. People tend to vote for their favorites without real consideration, that critics might give.

I see no fault on Crunchyroll's part, if they mess or try to control the popular vote they will be lamblasted for it, no matter what editorial excuse they give.

I think I'd like to come to the defense of Masamune-kun's Revenge. I can see how Jacob and Zac came away from the first episode with the impression they did, but I didn't get quite so strong a negative impression (and I tend to like my characters to be sympathetic --- perhaps even admirable).

For one thing, I think Masamune's shell is pretty thin (take the business with the spider in the first episode). For me, this humanizes him a great deal. The sister mentioning his vanity is telegraphing the idea that it's all on the surface, it's all show. Masamune seems to know this.

As to the breakfast scene, maybe Masamune is just an Atkins believer.

Next, I think the second episode introduced a few more characters, each of whom appear to have something going on beneath the surface --- from the class-rep with a bad case of imposter syndrome to the household servant with a revenge plot of her own.

I think the series may surprise us by redeeming itself from that first impression.

I've said this earlier but even after the rest of the season for the most part has premiered, while I frequently am one to push back on talk of a weak season, yeah this is weak season. I watched over 30 new shows last season and this season at best I will be watching about ten fewer shows. Now certainly last season was a strong season but even in absolute terms, this is a light season. Now there is one thing I will predict though. I think there will be a number of shows that, looking back from the end of the season, will have been underrated. Nothing like AOTY level probably but there may be hidden gems to find, though perhaps not amongst a very wide audience. I can't say which ones yet (really hoping ACCA) as ratings elsewhere aren't terribly different but I know I will be on the lookout.

I'm looking forward to the classic streaming cause I've been planning to watch some stuff I haven't seen but heard good things about and also rewatch some of my highest rated shows and I picked accordingly. Given Nick is the reviewer, I think one of my choices will be picked but maybe I'll be surprised. I'm a little disappointed that it will only be one as I wanted to get a couple of them on the plate but I guess there isn't enough time for that (you'd think a light season might open a few more slots but maybe not). Anyway I've never watched a series weekly that wasn't a simulcast so it might be interesting if it is one of my choices or one I didn't choose because of the limit on the number of choices.

On the CR awards, definitely something I'll take much less seriously next year. Most of the categories and the likely AOTY pick don't bother me (many are popularity contest oriented, also Rem ftw) but I was surprised by the popularity of the villain from ERASED given how much flak the show got for that aspect and I strongly disagree, strictly on the merits, with Yuri winning the Animation category with all the production issues it had over, while not my personal first choice, the heavy favorite among the sakuga community and the one that I would have chosen among the nominees, Mob Psycho. I'm not surprised by Yuri winning and understand why it happened and believe that the votes were made in good faith, as while not the best, Yuri does have some good animation and is obviously popular. Needless to say I did not hate Yuri (my number 2 AOTY) so it is not out of that, but I think next year I will not take the result in that category seriously next year.

On the question of the number of services needed to watch all simulcasts, Anime Strike actually has all of Sentai's simulcasts (well just Urara so far but I presume BanG Dream will be there too) so a TAN subscription is unnecessary if you get an AS subscription, not that many seem eager too but still. I again am spared from having to get a TAN subscription so all is well. Plus since Sentai is giving their stuff to AS instead of Hulu, I might be able to cut Hulu and end up saving money on my subscriptions (plus never have to watch ads in my anime ever again or at least so many as Daisuki has some even with the subscription) so potentially a win for me, though clearly not everyone or even most people. Side pun: I imagine BanG Dream will inspire many of them. Sorry just had to get that out there since I will probably never have been able to use it since it premieres so late and will probably not be reviewed on this site in the near future.

Oh and I appreciate Zac for becoming more open minded when it comes to genres/trends. That is how I approach the medium and that is how I think reviewers should (not trying to say I am one or worthy of it because of this). It certainly doesn't work for everyone but it has led me to see a lot of stuff I've enjoyed that I wouldn't have given a chance otherwise. Good on you Zac for not just automatically dismissing something for its genre or the trend it belongs to.

Jacob, you're not fooling anybody - you're dying to talk about Hand Shakers, so just turn on your tape recorder and have at it. Very Happy I wouldn't even call it hate-watching, but more amaze-watching at how stunningly baffling their creative choices are. Do it, do it, you know you want to...

I think you might change your minds on both Masamune and Tanya after their second episodes. I was pretty meh on both of them after the first, but Masamune throws in a twist I didn't expect that changes the entire dynamic, and Tanya is already charmingly evil as all get out, and I am no fan of loli anime as a rule. Maybe I just love it when a plan doesn't come together. It's still a drawback that the girls look like frogs (Tanya is more toadlike) and Tanya has fur instead of eyelashes, but I can get used to that. If you remain uninterested after the 2nd eps of these, then I imagine neither is going to be for you.
