It better be either Hatsune Miku or Pikachu or I will riot. I swear. Those two would make AWESOME mascots! Especially Miku!!

Olympic mascots are original designs and not from existing IPs. Shoko-tan is on the committee so she can identify if someone copies a design from an existing character. They want to avoid another incident like with the emblem as discussed in the article.

So, it's NOT going to be Doraemon, then? But we had running jokes on his show, of him training for the Decathlon!
