So...they liked it, meaning Shinkai should breathe a sigh of relief that he did a good job.

spoiler[Different timeline]=different world. Read between the lines.

[Edit]: that's a major, major spoiler. I've tagged it. Errinundra.

Um, Miyazaki barely said anything about the film. So I guess this means that Shinkai wasn't popular enough to get senpai to notice him? Rolling Eyes

Yeah, I'm still failing to see how this employs that trope anywhere near like Spirited Away did and how that's even relevant for Your Name since it's such a relatively minor thing since it's not even just about the girl. Is that all they got from the movie? It's a movie about a girl who goes to another world and they were able to tell the rest of the movie's direction from just employing a trope he used once?
"I thought someone would do that." Guess no one told them about Children Who Chased Lost Voices.

(sigh) O-kayyy, Hayao, what is it freakin' THIS--Oh, wait, he liked it. Anime smile + sweatdrop

(Thought for sure he was going to complain about the body-switching trope being too "TV-series commercial", and therefore probably perverted.)

To be fair, I haven't seen the movie in its entirety yet, but same, I'm failing to see how it more strongly falls into a "girl who goes to another world" category more strongly than a lot of other shows.
That said, if you were to ask me "what shows", I don't think I could give you an answer upfront.
It just seems like kind of a vague remark, and not exactly complimentary, nor negative. Just, a comment that doesn't seem to say anything either way. Did Miyazaki actually like it? I can't even tell.

Agreed. It's like have they never heard of fantasy or science fiction where different worlds/realities is common place. Never crossed my mine that it was anywhere being similar, because it isn't.

Shinkai may have knocked it out of the park beyond measure with your name., but I still think Hosoda is the apt successor for cinematic anime. His record has been more consistent and he's been able to tell different kinds of stories. I truly hope now that Shinkai has finally made the ultimate "star-crossed lovers" movie he's been trying to make for more than a decade that he'll grow a little more, story-wise.

If it is to anyone then it definitely should be to Masaaki Yuasa imo.

He lacks mainstream global appeal. I love his work, but that stuff isn't gonna win over the masses no matter how good it is. Plus Yuasa dirties his hands with TV Anime!

As to the main topic, I knew the Ghibli guys ahd to qualify any positive words. Essentially Shinkai's film is doing so well it is hard to just flat out said it is bad. It did lean more positive than I'd expect.

I would like for this Shinkai film to become popular enough where it defeats the inflated "Spirited Away" native box office. That way Miyazaki would have more to complain about and we could criticize it.
