saw this when i went to tokyo last year, wanted to do it but saw it too late. i was hoping to do it next time. guess that might not happen now.

I imagine they could compromise by not supplying the mario stuff themselves but instead opening a costume shop next door that just happens to rent out Nintendo clothes for the duration of a go-kart trip. Works for pachinko.

Normally I can't stand Nintendo's draconian stance toward fan works, but this seems like a pretty clear-cut case. You're using another company's IP without explicit permission and profiting from doing so.

Yes. Only they probably can't be the owners of the costume shop, but I'm sure they could convince someone it'd be a good idea to open one. |

I understand that Nintendo is trying to protect their IP, but I don't understand why they're taking issue with MariCart now when they seemingly had no problem with them featuring Super Mario cosplays in their races...

I think they got too high profile.
I see these guys around town ALL the time. And (old man get off my lawn time), honestly they're a bit of a road hazard. They zip around the tiny streets of shibuya and scream around Odaiba... These aren't people necessarily experienced with driving in Japan (90% are foreign tourists!). It was a nice idea and fun I'm sure but if you want to pretend to play mario kart, do it on a closed track. |

If they're profiting from this one, closed track or not, then Nintendo has the reasonable case to sue them. |

If they met with a Nintendo rep it doesn't seem like they were going behind their back (as if they could, openly driving around Tokyo). Were their lawyers so incompetent that they didn't insist on something in writing after the meeting? Because when it comes to Nintendo, I'd sure want something more than a verbal, "Yeah, sure, go ahead." I wouldn't even need to pay a lawyer to tell me I'd better have that.

Honestly, good riddance. I see these carts in Akihabara sometimes, and they're obnoxious. :/ I'm also surprised how long it took Nintendo to crack down on this, but I won't be decrying the loss of this service.

Yeah, I don't see how they'll fool anyone regarding them not infringing on any copyrights with this one. As much fun as it seems, I don't think Nintendo will let anyone get away with this, even if only because it looks pretty dangerous if someone reckless or drunk got into it.

Of all the nations in which I would have expected a go-kart to be a street-legal vehicle, Japan would hardly have been one of them. Can such contraptions even clear an ordinary speed hump?
