Textbooks won't help you learn a language, though. They are pretty much useless. People learn languages despite having a textbook and then some convince themselves it has helped them, when in fact, it did nothing.

Wait, this became memetic now? Whatever happened to that teacher whose name I forgot from a couple of years ago? That blonde lady from the English textbook that became really popular? Did she befall the same fate as Erin Esurance, where she drowned in all the porno made of her?
They can, but it depends on the teacher. The class must be built around using the language in writing and in conversation, and it must have practical vocabulary and one-on-one dialogue. Problem is that your typical school system, whether it be American or Japanese, is focused on memorization and standardized tests, which forces foreign language teachers to just have the kids treat the language like a series of facts rather than something to be used to interact with other people. (And then there was one of my Spanish teachers in high school, who was a polyglot, but not to converse. He just enjoyed studying and learning foreign languages for the sake of studying and learning them and DID treat them like mountains of facts and factoids.) |
