4 days to go, and embargo's still in place... So can we conclude that this movie's going to be awful?

I think all the apathy and ill will shall lead to a flat box office.

Remember, the Snow White and the Huntsman director is behind this. That says it all.

What embargo?

You can conclude whatever you like, but you cannot know if the movie is good or bad until you watch it.

I like what I have seen and read about it so I am looking forward to watching it. Unfortunately I will not see it until it gets released on disc so it will be quite a while yet.

I am very optimistic about Scarlett Johansson as the Major.
She looks good and after seeing her as Black Widow in the various Marvel Avenger movies I expect her to perform well as the Major.

Probably the embargo about not printing reviews until the movie is out. Pretty typical really.

The first four minutes was released on youtube by paramount. It's pretty but the acting left me with little hope.

Looks great to me. And I've been a fan of GITS since 94.

The rumor is that the film isn't being screened for critics. So with THAT we can conclude this is going to be bad

Or it just means they're certainly going to be worried about the reaction due to the ongoing backlash. That doesn't automatically guarantee it will be a bad movie.

I wasn't a huge fan of the idea back when this was announced. But I think they've managed to get the "look and feel" right, regardless of the casting controversy. That said, I am prepared to judge it on its own merits as a re-interpretation of Ghost in the Shell and not as a strict adaptation.

The way I see it is is that that if one keeps one's expectations modest, then one will minimize one's disappointment.

My $0.02.

My advice, especially if the film wasn't screened for critics, is to look at Beauty and the Beast and Power Rangers. Whichever you didn't see last week, see this week.

Not being screened for critics is the death knell for a film.

If anything, this movie will probably be pretty visually impressive. I like looking at this film, and it seems like they stayed true to a lot of the imagery.

However, with more trailers that came out, I started to get a little weary because it looks like a movie I've seen before.
"They didn't save your life. They stole it."
"I remember everything."
"I'm coming for them."
yada yada yada.

Granted, maybe these trailers are rather misleading and they will touch upon more of those existentialism themes the original film is known for. We won't know until we actually see the movie. I've seen far to many trailers not accurately represent the final product in a cynical attempt by studios to appeal to certain people for marketing purposes.

For example, you remember Drive? Those trailers made it look like some kind of Transporter-ish action movie, but the actual film was a gritty crime-noir drama and heavy character study. (which I really enjoyed btw)

To be fair, a stylish cyberpunk action flick can still be fairly entertaining in its own right, but I do hope it pays more homage to the first film with more than just visuals. (the only incarnation of the GITS I still enjoy and thinks hits on a level the following anime series adaptations and whatnot didn't)

But overall if it isn't that great, we'll always have the original.

I've been as critical about this film as anyone, but Piece Conran of ScreenAnarchy, a reviewer whom I respect very much, gave it a positive review.

It certainly won't be the best Ghost in the Shell thing we've ever seen, but it'll be entertaining.

It's very rare to see any Western anime adaption that pulls its own weight in the franchise, but while I cannot say for sure this one will be one of those rare cases, it does seem like a passion project worthy enough to check out. Which I'm going to do.
If it turns out to be an absolutely awful film or adaption, so be it. I'll still give it a chance.

if it's not being screened for critics that always points to one thing: that even the studio knows it's bad and needs to minimize damage before a major dropoff which leads to a financial flop. It's a last resort for when they realize they're boned.
