If it was made by Fox News Corp, I didn't expect any less. Reading a daily copy of the New York Post will pretty much confirm that.

Although it had some annoying little facts wrong (no, manga doesn't rhyme with bang-a), I thought the beginning explanation of manga/anime was passable.. but the jump to conclusions of "Hey, these two lame anime movies (I don't really consider Spirits Within as anime) failed at the box office.. so I think anime-style movies are doomed!" made no sense to me. Also, I don't know what they meant by Treasure Planet and Sinbad animated movies trying to be anime- just because they were adventure stories with large-eyed characters? Oh wait, what Disney movie doesn't have large-eyed characters? Don't mess with Gil Keane!

To be honest, I have to agree that anime may never be successful in theatres, simply because of the "Cartoons are for kids/anime is all porn" mentality; plus Asian films don't seem to do very well at the box office, which makes me sad. But yeah, the points the article tried to make were sorta dumb...

That's starting to change now with the success of movies like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Kung Fu Hustle, and Hero. Of course, those are live action movies. But it was surprising to see how successful those movies were since they were only foreign fims. Maybe anime can be succesful as them in a few years.

Failing to mention that Spirited Away won an Oscar was, as O'Reilly would say, ridiculous. So was relying on a guy like Hung to make market predictions when they had ICv2 sitting right there.

Otherwise, not bad.

No mention that in spite of vertually no advertising and very limited theatre distribution, the real reason for such a poor boxoffice take, Spirited Away still won the Oscar in 2003. The same is happening to "Howl's Moving Castle" Typical tabloid journalism. "Never let the facts get in the way of a good story." Rolling Eyes The real test will be when one of these "live action" anime's hits the screens. You can just imagine their excuse if it bombs? Rolling Eyes

Actually, i pronounce "manga" as in the element "Manganese". That rhymes with "Bang-a", but I don't know where they pulled that one from....

I just don't get it. How will the conversion from a manga format to a live action format help make it more appealing in the US?

I think he mis-spoke. If you read it in context, they are talking about theatrical movies. It should probably read more like:

"The only way [anime] is going to make it [in theaters] is when they make it live action."
