From the point of view of someone pretty thoroughly in love with K... this series has a huge problem: nothing of the anime after the first season really makes sense without the novels.

The novels aren't a source material, they're "side" stories and prequels, but the real substance of the characters' relationships are in those, and this movie and Return of Kings really feel kind of empty without them.

This new "Seven Stories" project is animating some of those, I just hope they do it well, and I hope they do it without spoilers for this and RoK, because once those get made, people really should watch them first.

I don't know whether or not the series planners know or care that only the animated parts are available at all outside of Japan, and I don't know how many people in Japan really understand or take for granted that the books are necessary as well as the anime, but... it just always seems badly planned to me.

If you're looking for an entry point into the K franchise, this 2014 movie is not the place.

Thanks for putting this right at the front of the review. It's sometimes hard to tell whether a television anime's tie-in movie is newbie-friendly just from the synopsis.

On a related note, any reason why they cut out the half-hour recap portion from this release? It could have made it at least a bit more approachable.

I saw this in theaters and about a hundred times on Hulu with subs before the DVD came out, and that was never included then. I've actually never even heard that before. So... yeah, that's not a new thing...
