I'm glad to see that some of the more alternative mangas are getting attention at ANN. To be honest, I was expecting a bit more praise (probobly because of Los Bros Hernandez and other news sources high recommendations), but your critiques are solid. I'll just have to read it for myself.

I doubt many otakus are going to be interested in this. I'm guessing DaQ are counting on their usual fanbase to buy it (thanks to the Tomie introduction) as well as some manga fans interested in serious, mature stories. |

Well I finally got around to getting the book today, and for the most part I agree with Carlo's opinions. Tatsumi is an amazing storyteller, particuarly in the way he can explore so many aspects of the Japanese psyche and society within very simple narratives with little dialouge. The repetative nature of the stories does weigh the collection down a bit, but his talent as a writer makes it a worthy purchase. One of the better releases of this year IMO.
As for the format, I can't complain about the quality of the package, but I would have liked it if D&Q would have ditched the hardcover edition simply so it could be more accesable to a wider audience. Unfortunatally, they're not known for putting out softcovers editions, so I doubt this will ever reach an audience outside indy comic fans and mature manga readers. |
