You get two versions of the movie, one in 4:3 and the other in 16:9.

Is the 4:3 version open matte or a pan-and-scan of the 16:9 release? I.e., was it drawn in 4:3 but cropped for 16:9 like Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer so the 4:3 version shows extra stuff, or is the 4:3 version a cropped version of the 16:9 release?

Beautiful Dreamer was an interesting case because Central Park Media at least once released an open matte version of the film, but there were parts at the top and bottom that were never meant to be shown, and were drawn by the animators knowing that they wouldn't be seen. Notably, this includes some bare breasts with nipples in one scene at the bottom of the 4:3 frame (and cut off in the intended 16:9 release.)

Years ago, when I first saw Crusher Joe long before there was an English dub, many of my friends and I were role-playing gamers. We quickly though of Crusher Joe as the Traveller movie, after the s.f. rpg of the same name. When some of CJ's tech started showing up in the Battletech game, it only reinforced that perception.

Joe and its sister series Dirty Pair definitely has some Star Wars in its DNA; I was even inspired to design a Star Wars (West End) campaign with a Crushers-style organization operating out of the Corporate Sector. However, I wouldn't be at all surprised if author Haruka Takachiho was also familiar with Harry Harrison's Stainless Steel Rat novels.

Endride: I'll be picking this one up. I'm curious to hear the dub, and I'm sure they did a fine job on it.

Lupin III: The Island of Assassins: This one sounds like a unique entry for Lupin. I think I'll get this too.

Speed Racer: The dub is legendary for what it is, so I don't think too many folks who saw the entirety of the series care much for the Japanese voices not being included. It is rather interesting they can never release those for overseas though, much like Pokemon DVD releases are dub only as well. I wonder why.

The movie was animated in 4:3 but was cropped to 16:9 for theaters (as a lot of movies were back then) and the recent Japanese Blu-ray Box included both of them with the 4:3 version on the main disc and the 16:9 version on a bonus disc for it's Limited Edition release.

Hmm, I got rid of my Crusher Joe manga just a couple of days ago (well, I say manga but it was one of those one chapter releases that used to be made back in the day). I remember finding the manga chapter somewhat endearing but I had 0 idea of the context of the story.

I guess this means that the rare Bandai Entertainment BD+DVD release of The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya won't be selling for crazy money on eBay anymore, not that I was ever tempted to sell my copy.

I'll probably get Himouto! Umaru-chan eventually though not any time soon with my current finances. Maybe if there's a Cyber Monday sale on it this December at a retailer that ships to Canada.

Mach Go Go Go would have to be a separate release due to all of the edits that were made: Funimation licensed both; I'm hoping that Funi is just waiting because they don't want people to confuse the two.

Please don't let this one die, Funimation!

Eventually, Discotek is going to run out of Lupin movies to license, and when that day comes, I wholeheartedly hope that they release some kind of box set.

They basically confirmed on their website recently that they're releasing it under Mach Go Go Go along with the 1997 remake.

Ah, thanks, so it is like UY:BD. I suspected that was the case, thanks for confirming.

I had to sell my BD/DVD Bandai version because it was in a DVD case and didn't fit in Funimation's box set. it worked out all right for me as I sold all my Bandai DVDs + Disappearance for Funimation's box set with Yuki-chan and Disappearance movie.

So I ended up ahead, with a version of season 1 I can actual watch without having to peel out of its terrible fitting box.

For an anime film (Crusher Joe) to have a runtime of 2 hours, 12 minutes it must have had a huge budget -- especially if all of the action sequences are well animated.

It was the eighties, any animated feature film would have had a nice big budget in Japan.
Crusher Joe doesn't disappoint on that front. It's a 2 hour non stop godly animated action film.
Remember it's 1983. Way before Akira, way before Royal Space Force, way before Project A-ko and 1 year before another heavy hitter Macross DYRL hits the streets. These films were special not because they had some kind of existential thesis to expose but rather they shined on the animation quality. They had a lot of money poured in and it showed. Today only very very few animted films have that kind of quality from start to finish. Some Ghibli movies come to mind and that's it. The rest of the modern animated films are nice in the same way a portrait is nice. It's all static. But it's not animation rather contemplation.

I have the Bandai Entertainment limited edition box for the first season of Haruhi Suzumiya but I keep the subtitled-only broadcast order DVDs in a separate CD carrying case for when I want to watch them.

Of course, I'm tempted to double-dip for the TV series to get them on Blu-Ray, even if it's just an upscale, but I have no money for anime right now and even if I could afford it, double-dips generally wouldn't take priority over shows I enjoyed on Crunchyroll but have yet to buy.
