Best news out of this interview IMHO is that Kim Manning mentioned that [adult swim] has approval from CN to start airing shows TV-MA if they're shown late enough, although she didn't specifically say how late. It's about time they get away from the TV-14.

She also didn't clearly state if the Evangelion will be shown TV-MA, but she did say there was basically no edits in the first couple of episodes.

AS is already showing TV-MA shows. Stroker and Hoop is MA. Eva won't be a problem.

Great interview.
"We want to edit as little from Evangelion as possible."

The first couple of episodes she said will be unedited, which is good, since, at least from episodes 1 and 2, there wouldn't be anything to violate adult swim standards. I hope they leave in the episode previews though. Kim also said they wanted to air it at 12:30am because they wanted to get away with as much as possible.

And that subtitled anime they talked about (a test as Kim said) hmm... in the future we may find out.

I enjoyed Paranoia Agent alot, but I guess I could see why they thought it wouldn't do as good as other series like Cowboy Bebop or InuYasha. Alot of adult swims audience seems to like action oriented anime with flashy visuals. Though Paranoia Agent had great animation and was an excellent series and I'm glad to hear it did well and is coming back next week. (she said September 19 I believe)

And TV-MA shows... kick ass. Maybe we could see Hellsing someday... soon. Very Happy

Wow, this is awesome. [adult swim] (or for that matter, CN as a whole) just keeps pushing the boundaries.

So when do we get the hentai? Laughing

Okay, here's a more reasonable one: Will we ever get to hear someone say "shit" INTENTIONALLY? Wink

Wait, maybe that will happen. Twisted Evil

Hopes to hear Misato say "Goddammit!" and "Don't bullshit me, Kaji!"

One of the cards said that on Sunday night, but it was swapped out for the encore showings.

Maybe, but it's currently snatched up by Starz!/Encore.

For those that can't/don't want to listen to it, here are a few of the highlights, off the top of my head:

  • AS can air TV-MA now
  • First few Eva episodes will be uncut
  • Lupin and Case Closed at 5 and 5:30 will be replaced by Super Milk Chan and Cartoon Planet (or was it Captain Planet >_>), and the shows at that block will be rotated occasionally
  • AS has talked about possibly airing Naruto (and a few other anime, like DBZ) uncut, while Toonami still airs it cut
  • They have one new show that they can't talk about yet, which is the subbed show mentioned before. Since Funi also has a few things they can't talk about, and it was revealed they have Beck, it's still looking possible
  • Eva will be aired in that timeslot to try to get buy with as much as they can
  • Paranoia Agent was aired because the guys at AS really liked it, even though they didn't expect high ratings for it

Cartoon Network is already airing uncut DBZ at 10:30pm (Eastern) Mon-Thurs.

I do hope they'd get some uncut Naruto, or if not, maybe some older classics uncut like Outlaw Star or Tenchi Muyo, heh....

I for one would absolutely LOVE for Adult Swim to air Saiyuki. I wanna hear Greg Ayres saying "you're just looking for an excuse to touch my ass!" on Cartoon Network... Laughing

Uncut and subbed! The "cuts" made to Naruto really aren't that bad, but a subbed version would be excelent, so people could hear how it's supposed to sound.

Oddly enough, I find this to be the most intriguing piece of information to come out of the interview. Partly because the rest of it could kinda already be inferred by prior news bits and the general flow of things at Adult Swim right now (like the fact that many shows are already exploiting the TV-MA permissions), but also for the fact that it gives those of us who were curious more insight into the general anime tastes of Adult Swim's staff. So they're definitely Paranoia Agent fans, and we've known for a while that they're huge Cowboy Bebop (and more than likely Big O) marks, as well, eh? Sounds like my kind of people. Razz

Heh, they have a giant foot statue of Big O if I remember, they stated in the bumps and even showed us it. (it looks really cool actually)

But still... I was surprised to hear Paranoia Agent did well and [adult swim] really liked it themselves too. I found it an interesting show and truly a stepfoward for what anime could air in the U.S. and adult swim (and Cartoon Network) in general.

Did you watch only one episode? The first 2 were rated MA.

Actually, almost all the episodes so far of Robot Chicken is rated TV-MA as per the programming guides and TV-Guide. No surprise there as I knew they would go light TV-MA but still I wouldn't expect them to go into heavy TV-MA stuff like shows on TNT, Sci-Fi Channel, HBO, or Starz and Encore. When Adult Swim can air some thing like Perfect Blue unedited, then you can all call me for the celebrations. Cool

Anyhow, that was a pretty insightful interview non-of-less and I'm glad that they don't just pick and air the popular animes. Good to hear that Paranoia Agent is getting another run, since that's such a great show and will be looking forward to seeing it again.

And yes, [adult swim] have a pretty strong action / anime line up this fall, can't wait to see it all.
