Great article. Rakugo and Kabukibu have definitely increased my appreciation for their respective art forms, the former especially. Kabukibu is better than I thought at first, but I think the main reason I'm watching it is to learn about Kabuki.

I don't know that Hanamaru has done the same for traditional swordmaking for me personally, but the franchise has clearly had a positive effect on the art form, which is a great thing. I am excited to see ufotable's iteration of the franchise though.

One small correction:

Quote:
Audiences can look no further than Shōwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjū, a series that distinctly chronicles the tribulations of loving a dying art and whether modernization to survive is itself a kind of death. Production I.G took huge risks adapting a josei manga focusing on the drama of sitting on a stage and telling a story.

Studio DEEN was the one that made Rakugo, not I.G.

So far, I've observed that the average Japanese person has no interest in any of things mentioned in article. They're like akin to say the Opera and watching live orchestra, takes years of training and skill but really it's an acquired taste and expensive as well...

I've corrected it, thanks!

Munechika and Kiyomitsu made me finally break down and buy my first (and second) figure. Yasusada will soon be my third. And I didn't even like the anime much, nor do I know jack about the game. Smile Looking forward to the ufotable version though.

[Rakugo] did not move units in the same way that Tōken Ranbu did, despite being critically well-regarded on both sides of the pond.

Only a handful of series have moved units like Tōken Ranbu did. It nearly gave Yuuri a run for its money.

But Rakugo can't move any units on this side of the pond until somebody licenses it (I guess CR has the first season, but they're just sitting on it?)! What are they waiting for? It wasn't just critically well-regarded, it also ended up on viewer top ten lists as well. They don't even need to dub it - probably better if they don't try. Just get a really good translator and take my money!! This is admittedly a niche series, but that's exactly why the longer they wait to release it, the less it will sell. Did no one learn anything from how Viz killed Monster by shelving it for 5 years (among other blunders)?

Sentai has apparently picked up Kabukibu already. As much as I'm enjoying that series, I'm going to be really deranged if it makes it out the door before Rakugo does. They'll hear my banshee wail from CA to TX. Evil or Very Mad

Don't forget the popularity of Chihayafuru, and its focus on the traditional Japanese card game karuta, which got multiple anime seasons, stage plays, and movie adaptations.

To quote a reply the user made to their own tweet a couple posts down "The #RakugoShinju production committee was King Records (Starchild label for S1), Kodansha and MBS. Studio DEEN didn't 'risk' anything."

The production committee are the ones that invested/risked the money. They're the ones hurt most when a series flops. On a major news website for anime/manga and related interests, that is a an extremity ignorant mistake to make. It's no wonder people have no idea what's going on with the industry when this is one of the leading news sources people rely on for to stay informed. Feeding a decades old misconception.

Unless the studio itself is part of the production committee, they risked nothing and stand to gain comparatively little to nothing from an anime's success or failure money wise. It's no wonder people seems to forget they exist considering in the west all simulcasts and of course home video releases deliberately cut that after OP reminder out. Think hard readers. When was the last anime you watched where "This work is brought to you be the following companies" with them being listed on screen was included in the episode?
