It's pretty cool most of the drama CD cast is back. They do sound promising in the manga promo videos Ichijinsha posted a few years back.

But once again, I have to wait and see who the heck is going to work on the anime! Hopefully they don't cheap this one out.

Yeah, I am also happy that they kept the same cast! Especially happy about Yurika Kubo! Smile

This is the one yuri anime that I am so hype for. The first anime that I read the original source before it was announced. I love Yuzu and Mei so much. They even have popular voice actresses (Ayana (Azunyan) and Minami (YrYr Yui) respectively) for this.

I hate to be a jerk for this. I am a yuri fan but I always think that Japan does not have high opinion of yuri and lesbians in general. Yuri does not seem to be marketable and most of the time, it is played out for jokes, subtext, fanservice, and """"""""friendship""""""""". Even popular series tend to treat it negatively or poke fun at it, whether if it is directly or indirectly. Sidonia, Witch Craft Works, Cross Ange, Sword Art Online, Hibike, Prisma Illya, Oratoria, Railgun, any CLAMP work, and even Yuri on Ice are some of those.

Het/harem is still a very big market and there have been plenty of yaoi(bait) works for several years. Meanwhile, yuri is still very niche, both as a market and a genre. It is like the Nintendo of romance genre. Yuri authors in Japan does not seem to have the motivation to make yuri stand out. Not surprising due to the otaku-pandering and romance/harem fanatics preferring at least one guy in their OTPs. As much as I love Citrus, I am pretty sure that even that will not change everything.

They are all reprising their roles from the manga's drama CD.

That's not completely true, as Sayaka Horino was the drama CD voice for Matsuri.

I don't think Cross Ange treated yuri negatively or poked fun at it. I don't even know what you're talking about with SAO, and I'm even an ln reader.

The yaoi series have been getting attention because they're really primarily aimed at fujoshi who were largely an untapped market with a large amount of purchasing power. The bigger hits like Yuri on Ice, Free, etc are all fujoshi bait to tap into that. Yuri just isn't in the same place.

I'm honestly happy Sayaka was replaced. She did a good job in the drama CD, and as Satsuki in Danchigai, but I think her voice is way too childish for Matsuri.

And I agree that Yuri series need more focus.

Cross Ange revealed a male self-insert right at the opening of the first episode who is very likely the controversial director's self-insert. Most of the yuri stuff was treated poorly (mostly rape and sex) and spoiler[the one girl who was in love with the FeMC lost her to the self-insert.]

As for SAO spoiler[it had a fan-favorite girl who is possibly in love with Asuna. The creator apparently gave her the good ol' classic tragic lesbian fate. As in, she had a certain disease and succumbs to it in the end.]

Another is Sidonia. One of the fan-favorite couples is a yuri couple. spoiler[They did end up together but for some reason, the creator turned one of them into a guy.]

Pretty much tells you something about (some parts of) Japan's perception of yuri and lesbians.

Did Ayana Taketatsu anger some powerful anime people? It really seems like she went from being in some fairly big anime to doing hard ecchi like that Student Council President show, and now this Yuri series, which I'm pretty sure is also pretty sure is fairly lewd. Her work output seems to have dropped off quite a bit, too.

Maybe I'm just overthinking things though, that and we don't get nearly as much news regarding seiyuu, so she there may have been information regarding her work slowing down that I don't know about.

Citrus does have fanservice (I mean, it's a Yuri series. Even Yuru Yuri has fanservice and a lot of people don't consider it a "true Yuri" since it's, well, Yuru Yuri), but it focuses way more on character development than fanservice. The fanservice only comes from time to time and it makes sense in context.

Also, about the adaptation, I hope they adapt the extra chapters too. Y'know, the 4komas and the side stories.

When does yuri on ice have lesbian subtext/fanservice? I don't think there are more than a couple scenes of women even talking to each other... the only named women are 1) yuris mother 2)yuris childhood friend (who is married with children) 3)yuris coach (50+ year old divorced woman) 4) sara (weird thing with brother) 5) mila (dating hockey player) 6) Isabele (engaged to JJ) 6) Anya (georgis ex whose moved on to a different guy)

I honestly don't know who you are even pairing together for the supposed subtext. Besides the triplets, Im pretty sure these are the only named female characters. Like.... are you confused or something? I literally can't see any potentional teased relationship here. There aren't even any main female characters!

Well in Cross Ange, Ange is very much bisexual and towards the end of the anime spoiler[She chooses the harem option. She accepts Hilda's feelings for her and ends up choosing both Tusk and Hilda as lovers. It might seem like Tusk gets more love than Hilda but keep in mind, Tusk got the short stick on almost all of his interactions with Ange (so give him some slack).] On a side note, the beta couple of Cross Ange (Chris and Rosalie) end up spoiler[ subverting the tragic lesbians trope through the power of love. I would count that as a small win for team yuri.]

As for SAO, there was no romance between Asuna and Yuuki. Asuna is essentially Kirito's true love interest (Which makes the harem aspect of the show a little infuriating to watch). All of their scenes together gave off a platonic vibe and I don't see how you could the idea that Yuuki viewed Asuna as anything more than a friend.

@smokeyjoey8 Ayana seems to appear less than she use to, which is a shame because she's one of my favorites. I heard she changed agents recently, I'm hoping she gets more roles in the upcoming seasons.

We can only speculate at this point, in regards to a studio. Studio doesn't determine quality, but... It's easier to guess than directors.

Some bigger studios that have been commissioned for shoujo ai/yuri TV anime in the past 10 years:

Silver Link (Yuri Kuma Arashi), J.C. Staff (Aoi Hana), Deen (MariMite sequels, Sakura Trick), Xebec (Mnemosyne) and AIC (Sasameki Koto). Deen has also done several shounen ai/yaoi TV series in the past ten years (including Super Lovers, Junjou Romantica, Sekaiichi Hatsukoi).

Deen seems to be the most likely candidate, but it's pretty much anybody's game.

If you REALLY want get your speculation hat turning, Infinite seems to be the one producing it according to their Twitter bio. And if you go by the titles they produced, those tend to be animated either by P.A. Works, White Fox, or Studio 3Hz.

Still, it's anyone's game even though the idea of Citrus being done by P.A. Works (especially if it's the good team) is really salivating.
