So basically season 3 will cover everything up till chapter 90? which is about 38 chapters, well i guess everyone who wanted a 2 cour will be happy.

In the preview it shows the cover for Volume 22. That goes to chapter 90. Since this season adapted up to Chapter 50 does that mean that the next season is going to adapt around 40 chapters? At about 1 chapter per episode that's around 40 episodes. If they adapt that many chapters I would be really happy but I guess we will just have to wait and see. Very Happy

I know the article's made it pretty clear already, but there's no harm in repeating it: the preview contains spoilers, huge spoilers, so I'd highly advise any non-manga reader to avoid it like the plague.

As I've said before, this is basically a confirmation that season 3 will be 2 cours long, which is great.

If Season 2 had been 2 cours in the first place, I would've thought Volume 17 of the manga would've been the perfect stopping point, where most major revelations have been made, spoiler[the inner government gets overthrown], and it would've capped off with a real epic climactic battle scene. Whatever works for Wit Studio, it's still great that they're moving along with adapting the manga. And after hearing confirmation from the author in a Season 2 video interview that the ending is bound to be different from the everybody-dies scenario he initially thought, I can remain engaged with the story and its characters and not know what to expect in the end until it comes!

Would not assume season 3 will be two cours, just over certain spoilerish scenes.

Based on that logic season 2 should have been three cours, given what the end credits depict.

If season 3 were to cover up till chapter 90,the anime would end up going on yet another three-four hiatus.
Hajime Isayama has stated he is against filler episodes-having a year between single cours allows the manga to progress, while keeping the anime fans more engaged.

No filler is needed, but a another 3-4 year wait would be if season 3 is 2 cours long.

If it wasn't for budget, we would have had 2 cour for this season.

This is effectively what Nordhmmer stated at the beginning of the third paragraph you quoted.

I've predicted the ending of the manga to be the end of the current arc, and going by the last two arcs, this current arc will be 20 chapters/5 volumes, and so it'll end with October 2018's chapter 110.

The fact that this teaser video covers the next 10 volumes of manga, from 13 through 22, and the next two arcs, also likely means that Isayama knows his story is almost done. I say this because he had Wit stay 3 arcs behind the manga, and up until the season 3 trailer, the anime would be 3 arcs behind. If the next 2 arcs are coming out next year, in a 2-cour season (1 arc per cour), then they would only have the final Cour to animate, presumably for a 2019 release.

For those not keeping track, here's the breakdown from the first two seasons, of how the manga was adapted into anime:
Season 1 - 25 Episodes = 34 Chapters

Season 1, 1st Cour (1-13) = 18 Chapters
Chapters 1-2 = The Fall Of Shiganshina Arc
Chapters 15-18 = The 104th Training Arc
Chapters 3-14 = The Battle Of Trost District Arc
Spring 2013

Season 1, 2nd Cour (14-25) = 16 Chapters
Chapters 19-34 = The Female Titan Arc
Summer 2013

Season 2 - 12 Episodes (26-37) = 16 Chapters
Chapters 35-50 = The Clash Of The Titans Arc
Spring 2017

And below is my updated prediction for the rest of the series:
Season 3 - 25 Episodes = 40 Chapters

Season 3, 1st Cour (38-50) = 20 Chapters
Chapters 51-70 = The Uprising Arc
Spring or Summer 2018?

Season 3, 2nd Cour (51-62) = 20 Chapters
Chapters 71-90 = Return To Shiganshina Arc
Summer or Fall 2018?

Season 4 - 13 Episodes = 20 Chapters?
Chapters 91-110 = The Final Arc?
(Chapter 110 publishes October 2018)
Spring 2020?

The only way Isayama would let Wit animate the next 2 arcs would be if he knew he was near the end, and releasing the final chapter right after the end of Season 3 would be very appropriate and fitting.

-Marc.

I am cool with season 3 being only one cour, but I would be happier if it is indeed two cours long. And I don't think the trailer is that spoilerific; it is just a bunch of manga covers with no context. I imagine that by know most anime-only watchers have been spoiled on some things from the manga.

At the pace the anime is being adapted 40 manga chapters translate to 30 anime episodes, but I imagine a two cours season 3 with that much material being covered will have 26 (or even 27) episodes.

Hands up if you think it'll be pushed back to 2022!

Seriously, I long for the days when anime ran weekly until they ran out of material to cover. Sick of this whole 12 episodes a year thing. Hate it even worse with lower budget anime like Berserk and Sailor Moon.

I would to imagine what a AoT filler episode would be... "We're under constant threat of attack... time for some hot springs action instead!"... much less an entire filler arc. An invented character, an invented titan, I wonder who could it be...

This whole wait of a year between short seasons would seem to be a waiting pattern until the manga is in sight of its conclusion... then I'd imagine they'd wrap up the whole thing in one huge chunk so that they finish up roughly the same time. Kind of like what FMA Brotherhood did but with a lot less actual planning.
