Okay, I'm getting conflicted reviews here..

The person from animenow, said that the movie is spoilerly at best, but can still be enjoyable for anime only fans. While this review, states that's its inaccessible for anime only fans. So which is it? Well i will find out my self the 29th of next month anyway.

I of course have read and am caught up with the novels, so I'm curious about the movie as a whole and I want it to do good overall.

Also I want to point out that this reviewer is in the wrong about girls being shamed of showing to much skin in the mahouka world. This isn't true to be honest. For public decorum, sure its recommend to show less skin, but that's largely due to the planets ecosystem being cooled down dramatically during WWIII. Showing a little skin isn't a huge issue overall, like Mayumi's sundress or Erika's casual clothes during the NSC, where no one reprimanded them or cared to do so. The only reasons Mizuki was recommended to change by Miyuki was due to the fact that her outfit was a little to provocative and with Mizuki being her shy/slightly introverted self would gather a lot of unwanted attention.

I'm surprised if the visuals are lacking. I've always felt Kana Ishida's design style just isn't suited for animation. But the fact feels like it says something, considering how they switched studios.

So in short, there's been some progress, but even now the production staff still hasn't figured out the best way to animate Mahouka? Man, script writing is hard.

Thank you for the review.

Couldn't someone read summaries of the novels sure it's not the same as actually reading them but you'll have an idea of what is going on. Yes the series can be dry with it's world building but I actually think that's part of it's charm.

Thanks for the comment. I don't think Kana Ishida's designs are to blame for any poor animation. She herself is an animator and has had prior experience adapting character designs for anime (for example, she adapted Oreimo's character designs). I also don't think that the switch to another studio was necessarily the reason, as the production retained many of its core staff. Also, please remember that this is my subjective impression of the animation. I'm harder on it because it's a film and I expect films to look better than TV shows, but replicating the look and feel of the TV series may have been the intention of the staff.

The TV series was never very strong visually

I think many will disagree...

Come to think of it, you're right. The issue isn't really with the animation, I guess? I still think the visuals in the TV series could have been much stronger.

Nevertheless, I'm still looking forward to it.

I'm with Frog; when I got the first English LN it struck me just how clean the designs were and, together with Jimmy's CG prop models, it seemed like they were were angling to get it animated from the start.
As it happens, I've finally got a copy of vol. 3 today (although I am still missing vol. 2..)

Saw the movie today and I largely agree with the reviewer. As an anime only viewer, I wouldn't say that it is totally inaccessible, but it does assume familiarity with one of the characters that isn't in the TV series (Lina), mostly in the form of "Oh So and So is here so that means Such and Such organization is here too". It isn't too bad after after the first time, but anime-only viewers will be asking "Who? From what?" at least once and we never really find out how the characters know her. While I wouldn't say it is bad, the animation is definitely not what you would expect from a theatrical release and no better than the TV series. The fanservice was nicely done. Overall, while I liked it, it did not reinspire my love for the series as with Ordinal Scale, and it would not be close to the top of anime movies I've seen this year, to say the least.

One issue I had with the plot was spoiler[when they sent Lina (and her team) to attack the research facility and base. Given the rarity of that level of Magician, and their distinct powers, using them would be readily traceable back to them (Tatsuya noticed her presence that way, and I can't imagine he would be the only one) and therefore their government. Using such readily traceable assets to attack a military base of a country they are not at war with, which could reasonably be treated as an act of war regardless of the circumstances of the particular raid, would only lead to war or at best be a serious international incident. Luckily there were no civilians killed, but if it were the real world, Japan would at least be calling the US and diplomatically telling them "Dude, WTF?!"]

I watched this movie twice since they were giving away various freebies where this was being shown:

Anyways, I enjoyed the movie overall.
-Tatsuya OP as usual
-All of the main characters are awesome Smile
and

Angelina Shields is cute and pretty...........and voiced by Yoko Hikasa (best known for her work in K-ON, Frame Arms Girl and so forth) Smile

In any case, for people who only saw the anime and have not seen the novels/comics (like me), there may be some things that may be a bit of confusing...

But
Overall, I rate it 10 out of 5 hehe

Story-wise, it is better than the Kancolle movie for sure haha Smile
