I read Vinland Saga as Makoto Yukimura's creed against violence. He's said as much himself--I found a redditt post with a partial translation of a French interview with him: Why Planetes has a Sense of Nothingness

He has also written in his author's notes how during the course of drawing Vinland Saga he got married and had children. I think, in showing how Thorfinn's father, Thors, gave up warfare and ran away to raise his family in peace after his first child was born, Yukimura wants to show how love and nurturing should take priority in a righteous hero's heart over war and battle. It is no coincidence that Thorfinn finds an orphan to care for this volume, as he begins his journey towards what he hopes will be a peaceful life. It was my favorite part of the book, and it continues into volume 9, which I hope you review soon!

I didn't consider Thorfinn choice to find Vinland as a way to run away from sins he doesn't feel worthy of forgiveness for, but that makes a lot of sense.

Bookmarked the interview and I will try to get you a translation! Smile And as soon as I get to the mainland and the comic book store, I'll have a review for volume 9.

I agree that Yukimura's own experience with his children is likely influencing Thorfinn's interactions with the infant. It forms a wonderful contrast for his earlier character as well - where once Thorfinn was all about violence and death, he's now in charge of the most fragile form of human life.
