REVIEW: Gilgamesh DVD 1

Just as a note, while Babylon is a Mesopotamian city, the Epic of Gilgamesh is not Babylonian as the reviewer mentions. Gilgamesh was a Sumerian king of Uruk.
Also this anime seems to have absolutely nothing in common with the legend except for the names of Gilgamesh and Enkidu. The rest is totally made up. Looks like the whole "Gilgamesh" thing is used only as a way to give the show a mysterious legendary ring. Not that there's anything wrong with that if it's good...

Well by the end this is about as true to the story of King Gilgamesh as Eva was to Christian mythos. In other words it uses the bits and pieces convient to the story and ignores others.

What? A "B" for animation? Well I suppose the animation was ok-ish in the beginning. All I can remember is that I dropped watching the show because the animation was so painfully bad it made the show lose all it's appeal.

If I remember correctly I watched some 15 or maybe even more episodes before finally giving in. The mysterious story never really went anywhere. The pace was all wrong and made me lose concentration many times. Not to mention utterly uninteresting characters and an annoying lead...

Yeah, the animation was pretty poor I thought. Alot of the animation reminded me of old school Scooby Doo episodes which really doesn't speak too highly of the animation. Some of the character design was nice and the backgrounds were well done, but the overall movement and animation just seemed very poor to me.

It was an okay show, it just didn't catch my interest and it was hard to get past the poor animation. Given a good story though I can usually see past that, but this story just didn't hold my attention or interest me at all.

The animation was cleaned up a lot for the DVD version, IIRC.

I had a hard time making it past the first two episodes of this series, but once I did.... I was hooked. Gilgamesh and Princess Tutu are the only two ADV series I'm currently buying, which is a big change from last year.

I usually don't notice bad animation as long as the show is enjoyable enough, but since the first episode of this series was pretty boring, the shortcuts that the animators used was very noticeable to me and therefore made the show even less appealing Confused. The first episode definitely didn't hook me into the series and the unappealing character design didn't really help either.

Hello everyone, I'm new here but I wanted to add to this. When I first saw Gilgamesh it was on Anime Network on Demand and honestly I didn't even finish the first episode. I didn't like the character designs in the very begining and the thugs a little later on just annoyed the heck out of me so I just shut it off. A few weeks later I was bored and I was browsing and I put on episode 5. I got sucked right in this time and went back and watched all the episodes I could. I ran out and bought the DVD's. I had to eat crow because at first I had told the clerk I didn't like it, now I can't wait for the 4th DVD to come out. The animation isn't the smoothest but the atmosphere is gorgeous. I just absolutely love it.

I think the plotline of Gilgamesh doesn't kick into high gear until the fifth episode, so that was a good jumping-on point for you IMO. Yes, the pacing of the series starts out very slowly, but this is a series that can potentially turn into something special. I'm a big fan of comtemporary anime like Texhnolyze and Paranoia Agent so I was immediately interested in Gilgamesh. I watch the first episode from the sampler disc in the June 2005 issue of NTUSA, and while the first episode didn't completely impressed me, there was enough that pursuaded me to give it a rental. Currently I'm renting this series, and IMO it is getting better and more mysterious with each episode.

Contraty to some of the opinions on this thread, I think that the character designs and the backgrounds are outstanding. The characters look almost lifelike and their various expressions from stoic to confusion are illustrated almost flawlessly.

i thought that the first episode was interesting, right now that is the only episode i have seen. Im going to watch more on Friday. I like this brother and sister relationship, and i also like the dark animation, i dont mind the animation. To me story and characters matter most.
