Been really enjoying this show so far. We're getting 25 episodes too so plenty of time to adapt the story and develop the characters down the line. I'm pretty sure at this rate, the series is aiming for a full adaptation.

Out of the main characters introduced so far, I like Mordred the most.

For better or worse, Fate/Apocrypha also lacks a strong unifying theme.

Yeah, the primary themes of the series, spoiler[immortality and salvation], come into relief later on, though you get little bits and pieces early on.

Also agreed on Mo-San and Astolfo being best, good taste reviewer. I've had a few issues with the anime thus far, but with 22 episodes to go I doubt I'll be disappointed.

I don't think it's really fair to complain about the themes and character motivations when we're only 3 episodes in. Fate/Zero has 7 masters and 7 Servants, 14 Total. Apocrypha has 14 + 14, 28 total. Expecting everything to be laid out on the first 3 episodes is a bit eh... I mean, look at Kiritsugu, arguably the MC of Fate/Zero, people only started really caring for him after his 2 episode flashback, which, if i'm not mistaken, were episodes 18 and 19.

I'll be the first to admit that most Servants were a bit underutilized in the Light Novel, but still... :/

About the animation, i really liked it, but you can tell that the people doing it are rather inexperienced. It feels like they are on the right track but didn't either have the experience of the funds to pull it off 100%. Also, the sfx were a bit distracting during the spoiler[Sieg - Karna Fight]. The (Insert name of this - https://twitter.com/o_ihs_oy/status/886264950091431937) were much clearer.

Regarding the adaptation itself, the amount of detail skipped is rather large. Nothing i'd say is very important, but still felt noticeable for LN readers. Scenes were changed, for instance, in the LN Saber of Red doesn't outright tell his/her name, it's the master who guesses it.

Eh, i'm mostly happy so far, so let's see how this goes.

That they're utilising more traditional animation techniques for the action scenes makes me wonder how things will hold up when quality inevitably starts to take a dip as the series goes on. Ufotable fate fights could often be little more than two characters standing still while throwing cg at each other, but all that digital trickery helped hide it.

That is known as "genga" or "key animation drawings".

That. Forgot the name and was lazy to search it. Neutral

Apocrypha's such a fun romp. So far it's just tease with no major battles yet but all that's gonna change real soon now that Berserker of Red is just honey-badgering his way straight to Vlad Castle. With 14 servants and masters in play you gotta make every minute count yo! I mean, it's not like they're just going to kill themselves spoiler[(amirite Lancer? hehe too soon?)].

Also, mad props to Semiramis for single-handedly bringing back sexy. In a show where nearly every character could nail a smash in a "smash or pass" vote, that's quite the feat. That being said, Karna's hot on her heels. (Praise the Sun!) And my main man Shakespeare being a Caster is just pure win. Dammit everyone's too awesome to die! XD

That's not a problem with the SFX, but a problem with the actual broadcasting. There was an unknown issue that created a hella distracting ghosting effect that was unintentional. It will be fixed for the BDs. But anyway, yeah, that's not how the finished product was supposed to look.

I'm really enjoying this so far. Most of the cast seems pretty interesting. I hope too much of the focus doesn't end up on that kid because every scene involving him feels like a giant waste of time.

I was also surprised that the exposition talks about the greater grail from Heaven's Feel.

Again with the manly heroes thing... I'm done with this heteropatriarchal Fate propaganda.

At least wait for the windmill to be built first before you tilt at it.

I think it has to do with the Male = Power thing in legends. Couple that with the need for strong servants and you can guess who Mages prefer when using catalysts.

Also:

RIP Mo-san.

Glad to see this review, although I've personally been kind of disappointed by Apocrypha so far. I'm a long-time passive Fate fan, so I've been really looking forward to this. And while I think the premise is great and absolutely rife with potential, I've felt the execution has been pretty spotty. Plus, a number of significant head-scratchers:
spoiler["Siegfried! You must not tell anyone your name! (Since Siegfried is physically immortal except for a single weak point, knowing his identity means knowing that weak point.) [Shortly thereafter...] "Yo, I'm Karna." "Sup? Name's Siegfried."
/headdesk
Right in front of the very same master that told him not to reveal his identity, no less, who proceeded to not react whatsoever.]

Apparently that did NOT happen in the original novels, leaving everyone a little baffled at why the anime did that.

Also, I kinda hate Astolfo's master and every scene with her. She embodies a cliched archetype I'm just so tired of.

At least Mode Red and Shishigo are great. More of them, please. Also looking forward to Archer of Red finally getting actual screen time.

It's been pretty good so far. Fate/Zero is possibly my favorite anime, but I've been hesitant to look at anything else in this series after even Ufotable couldn't adapt Fate/Stay Night into something watchable. Thankfully, this show appears to be an entirely different beast, and so far, it has more in common with the masterful Fate/Zero than that dumpster fire Fate/Stay Night. I'm happy to have more quality stories in this universe finally.
