So in other words you'd do better watching the anime series.

Glory of the Defeated isn't designed for people new to the franchise. It's a retelling of the story, incorporating both Episode Zero and Treize's backstory portions of Frozen Teardrop.

And adding stuff to make the EW designs not seem like outright retcons (they totally were)

As someone already familiar with the WING series, I thought it was pretty fun. But it might be hard for newcomers. Definitely 2 independent ratings in my mind.

I see. So this means Frozen Teardrop and the whole Mars affair really is canon.
I mean, I've known about it. But seeing further confirmation about it through this manga just settles it more.
Anyway, I agree with the art. I really like how glorious the redesigned Gundams look in the action scenes.

Eh they didn't really come off as retcons to me but basically the designers taking advantage of the what I assume was Endless Waltz's higher budget to make the designs more elaborate.....though the angel Wing's on Wing Zero always came off looking a bit silly.

Oh for certain Gundam The Origin and Gundam Thunderbolt are better manga. But if you've already watched Gundam Wing and want something that incorporates the EW designs instead of rewatching the TV anime and imagining Trowa having more guns and almost no one having a shield or something than this is a fun book to check out. Other cool stuff is coming like Tallgeese with wings, because why not ha ha!
I however would not recommend it to anyone who has not watched the anime. The events of the first episode of the anime occur completely out of order in the manga. I can only imagine that was done so people who watched the anime do not feel like they are reading the same exact story again.
Doubt this is a big problem though. Who hasn't watched Gundam Wing? Even Megan Fox watched Gundam Wing! If you haven't seen it you need to correct this immediately! Even people who hate Gundam Wing watched all of it lol!

As far as the Japanese release has gone, the only thing from FT that has been incorporated is Treize's backstory.

Quote: | In Japan, Gundam Wing: The Glory of Losers was released in 13 volumes, and I have an inkling that when one is able to process the work as a whole, it probably makes a lot more sense. |
The series is still being serialized in Gundam Ace. It should be wrapping up within the next 4-6 months, unless they segue into Endless Waltz that is...

I have a feeling it is more them taking advantage of the ability to sell an entirely new line of merchandise, but I like your more positive view.

When given the choice between owning the anime or manga, assuming they're more or less the same, I tend to get the anime. Only when they are drastically different such as Rosario + Vampire or FMA before Brotherhood came out is when I'd get both. But Gundam Wing is a series I love so much to this day, it still is my favorite anime and I own it recorded on video cassette, DVD and now I'm looking to get the Blu-ray, but I'm also getting this manga, it's one of these exceptions because that's how much I love it.
There have been other manga adaptations of the series before but they were very rushed and served as cliffnote versions with very mediocre artwork at best. At least they put more effort with the side stories' art and pacing like Episode Zero, Blind Target, Battlefield of Pacifist, and The Last Outpost. I also wasn't fond of how they made it slightly more humorous which to me, unless it's Yes, Minister, doesn't work with a politics-heavy series.
My only gripe with this manga is that Tallgeese eventually got the bird/angel wings which looked sweet on the Wing Zero Custom, but putting it on any other MS doesn't look and just seems a bit too much.
