I like that Hyouka does something other than murder mysteries. It has bugged me for a while that mysteries, at least generally speaking, focus so much on it, like the writers think somebody has to die before the audience will be invested.

Just curious, but is there an ETA as to when collection pictures will be added to this column again? I don't even see there being a line requesting submissions, which leads me to believe that feature has been nixed.

I know that the site was hacked a while ago, but I really miss seeing those pictures.

Can I gush about how perfect Adam Gibbs was as Houtarou? Everyone else was well cast, too, but Adam especially. It's no wonder FUNimation (or Mike McFarland, specifically) went out of their way to get this typically Sentai Filmworks voice actor to play this character. Wonderful things can happen when dubbing studios venture outside of their usual talent pool. Tales of Zestiria the X, anyone? Very Happy

I think Tales of Zesteria was pretty much outsourced, but yes Adam Gibbs did a great job in the show.

I've gotten used to the pairing of KyoAni and Sentai, so it was cool to have Adam Gibbs involved.

Yeah, that's what I'm also wondering about, it isn't really Shelf Life without Shelf Obsessed. I know I come to the column for new release info, but without the pics of other people's shelves, it feels really down to me.

Yes, I did read before that since the Shelf Life column of 9/21 here...

I'm still keeping Shelf Obsessed on hold until everything's back to normal on our site.

So yeah, how long is that going to take for things to get normal? Until the .com domain of ANN comes back? I mean, it looks kinda "fixed" in a sense in the alternate .cc domain, but I suppose there might be issues. Hopefully one day...

This series' visual language is just wonderful. If you want an animated example of what "enchanted" would look like, just watch the sequence when Oreki first looks into Chitanda's eyes. I also enjoyed the changes they'd make to the backgrounds to imply what Oreki is thinking or feeling; for example, the pendulum in the cafe where he meets Chitanda.

Then there's the contrast of Oreki's minimum effort life-style and the sheer amount of animation done. What I noticed was that they didn't take the usual short-cuts used in anime. When the characters stand to leave the club room, you see it rather than just a still of the door or a desk with the sounds of people standing and leaving. There were a lot of completely unnecessary bits of animation, yet their presence goes a long way in making this anime stand out.

If there's no murder then it's just a puzzle usually. It's why this series spends four episodes on a single murder mystery while the rest get debunked or solved in a single episode or less.

My own feeling on Hyouka is still in question until I see part 2- I loved the first episode's fancifulness but it quickly devolved into "One Sherlock, three Holmes". "Remote Island Syndrome" did all of this, added a meta pretext as a prologue, doubled down on its own mystery with an ending stinger and had two Holmes and no Watsons in just two episodes. With an added bonus that one Holmes thought the other did it.

That's the real problem with mysteries, the more you know about them, the less mysterious the whole genre gets. I came up with all the endings for the four episode finale including the one most obvious to fans of the genre and its translation to different mediums.

There a few things that spiked my interest regarding setting and past events but as a LN series adaptation, I'm already preparing for disappointment. These publishers and editors really need to enforce continuity on the franchises they sell like the way manga editors do. "Well, it came up in the first novel and we went in another direction so we're just hoping people forget about it."

Can anyone tell me if this Ranma 1/2 OVA boxset restored the original individual opening and ending songs and animations for their respective episodes? The first OVA set I purchased years ago had all the opening and ending songs set aside on another disc in the set as extra content. Each OVA episode ended up having the same op and ed songs throughout the set.

I don't like when Hyouka is treated as a mystery show, even though it is.
For me it is a show about friends and character development with mystery on the side. None of the mysteries were ground breaking or surprising, but to me it wasn't about them, they just helped move the show. The second part of the show will see the characters develop very well, best I've seen in any anime.

Also, the music in this show is superb.

The mysteries are just ways to get the characters to develop. A few of the short-stories (1 episode solving) feel a little empty, but otherwise they're always pushing something forward (usually Oreki)

I think the school festival arc is one of the best novels/arcs in anime ever. But that's Part 2.

Thrilled to see Hyouka finally licensed. When I first watched it I was blown away and re-watching it now in English I'm reminded of the joys of the mysteries, the evolving cast, and the gorgeous animation and direction work. Couldn't be happier with this review; it definitely nails what makes Hyouka special.
