While I was going to say "Isekai Smartphone is bad and has bad animation, you say? What a hot take", he did point out some stuff I didn't notice, so I'll give him that.

Oh good, not that other Otaking.

Anyway, OldManYellsAtCloud.jpg is a bit overused. So let's get a bit classier with this excerpt from Teddy Roosevelt.

"It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat."

Yeap, im sure he would have a unbiased opinion. It remembers me of many anime critics (anime fans amateur critics and even professionals critics) that hate shows even before episode 01 Twisted Evil

well at least he criticized the visual composition, that made it a better read than the thousands of people criticizing the plot.

We are talking about Isekai Smartphone, right? What about it strikes you as "striving valiantly" or "daring greatly"? I ask that genuinely, and I welcome any efforts to persuade me about the merits of the show.

Also, the metaphor falls apart, given that he isn't just some critic, but a former member of the industry. Say what you will of the man, but he certainly knows "victory and defeat" as it relates to the anime industry.

Well considering he has made almost 200 episodes on his YouTube channel there is a good chance he will get around to it eventually. Also it would depend on what Okada personally considers to be an animation error and what he would accept as part of the art style.

Well considering he has made almost 200 episodes on his YouTube channel there is a good chance he will get around to it eventually. Also it would depend on what Okada personally considers to be an animation error and what he would accept as part of the art style.


I hope the get to it. He have a long experience in the industry, been a former Gainax president.
I'm sure he can find errors in almost every anime made. Twisted Evil

Okada's not an animator, though. He was a president for a company that ironically didn't make it's big break until he quit. He's another one of those people like Yamakan who can't find work anymore so they complain about the industry.

Although I understand the point being made, I really don't think isekaI smartphone is quite at the Teddy Roosevelt level.

I hate to say it but the only thing I have ever outright noticed mistakes in animation was the Battle Royal High School OVA from the 80s, though I'm pretty sure it's because I'm not observant enough when I'm watching anime.

Well, he's not wrong, but I feel like the Smartphone crew could fight back if they just reminded everyone of the existence of Gainax's desperate cash-grab works (He Is My Master, This Ugly Yet Beautiful World, Wish Upon the Pleiades).

Still, does bring up the point from the Kemono Friends discussion, that we have qualified animation insiders bringing professional ink-and-pencil grudges online as if they were raging personal bugbears, and expecting the mass public to rally by their sides.
Imagine if an airplane technician said "How can you people accept the horrific lie that is Boeing's Airbus, just look at what they call streamline support-riveting!!" Um, yeah. You seem a bit worked up there, dood.

Except that with animation, you have an actual fandom following the discussions, and the raging professionals leading the discussions. I haven't watched Smartphone yet, and now all I'm "allowed" to judge it upon is that messy left-hand design scale.
Which is pretty bad, yes, but, er, what's the show about, again? Confused
