That's amzing to have shipped 2+ mil and sold 1.5 mil. Congrats to Yoko Taro, Platinum and Nier for its success! And thanks to SE for letting it happen. (Hopefully they learned something here too.)

That a game can sell well on word of mouth and brand recognition and doesn't need an obnoxious 120 gorillion yen advertising budget

Nope, neither that nor any of the PC version's other issues ever got patched. (although ATI released a graphics driver update that fixed white screen crashes for some Radeon cards)

Which isn't guaranteed by default and a bit crazy given that none of the other Nier games burned up the charts. If anyone should learn from this it's Platinum given how their games typically hit the market like bricks in spite of high critical acclaim.
