So...Hayao Miyazaki doesn't want his own son to direct the next Ghibli project? Is that...a bad sign, or something?

I'd say that's the common Japanese trait of old men never wanting young people do to anything to their things, because they won't follow exactly in their footsteps.
This could be an interesting thing

All joking aside, as long as the family Miyazaki keeps this conflict professional and not personal, it shouldn't be a problem. Let's just hope they can do that. And...yeah. Mispelling someone's name isn't too hot. |

Not just Japanese...American too. Charles Shultz(creator of "The Peanuts") before he died (I think right before he died)didn't want anyone new to make the peanuts...His wife I believe honored his wish by making some kind of copyright issue or something...can't remember the full details because it's been a while but I think it's not just a Japanese trait. |

Does anyone know the source or article where Hayao Miyazaki expressed his disagreement with his son's idea? I'm just curious to see if he elaborated on his comment.

I'm guessing he doesn't want his son to produce the Ghibli equivalent of Battle Royale 2.

I certainly think it would be better if the elder Miyazaki showed some support for his son, but I also understand the reservations he must have. This is the first time I've ever heard of Goro Miyazaki and he seems to be completely new to the animation field (if I'm wrong in this assumption, please correct me). So on one hand we have a young and inexperienced artist, and on the other, an established and major motion picture animation studio. It may turn out that Goro Miyazaki pulls off something wonderful in his directorial debut, but it's wrong to assume he has natural talent just because of his father's reputation. |

Well, Nasucaa.net says that before he became director of the Ghibli Museum, Goro was a landscaper. This would imply that the only reason he's getting this chance is because he has a famous dad. Ghibli is arguably the most prestigous animation studio in the world, and getting to direct one of their films is a rare achievement requiring tremendous talent. It's supposed to be something you achieve after years and years of hard work, not something that's handed to you because of your name. If that's the case here, I can see why Hayao would be ticked off at this. Besides, he already had his successor at Ghibli all picked out. I can't remember his name, but I remember his name wasn't Miyazaki.
Of course, I could be wrong and maybe Goro will end up making a wonderful movie. We'll find out. |

Q: How do you think about a successor of Miyazaki? Suzuki: I think, a successor is needless for a director's work. And Suzuki said repeatedly on his interview, "Ghibi is the small factory founded in order to make Miyazaki's film. When it becomes impossible for us to make it, we will close our studio. We do not work in order to maintenance and development of our studio. Every world repeats the birth - prosperity - end. KONDO Yoshifumi, a staff animator at Ghibli, made his directorial debut with Mimi Wo Sumaseba (Whisper Of the Heart), and some people regard it as one of the finest of the Studio Ghibli movies. Unfortunately he never directed another film, as he died of a brain aneurysm in 1998. Certain scenes in the most recent non-Miyazaki Ghibli movie Neko no Ongaeshi (The Cat Returns) do have some nice touches - it was directed by MORITA Hiroyuki, whoseems to have a good track record in animation. |
