I take it that this "Shin" manga is what Viz in the west have been calling "No Need For Tenchi" and later "The All New Tenchi Muyo" GNs? Now Kajishima wrote his own doujinshi novels back in 1997 called "Shin Tenchi Muyo" but they were litiary novels, in other words lots of kanji but few pictures. These can't be those as he allegedly only wrote 3 volumes, possibly 4. Shame that, but they were running out of ideas for a good story.

I believe the "Shin Tenchi Muyo" manga is just referring to the "All New Tenchi Muyo" GNs that have been released here. I'm not 100% sure, but I'm pretty sure the "No Need For Tenchi" series (as it's called here) ended at the 12th volume, and the "Shin Tenchi Muyo" manga is a new series.

Actually, it specifically refers to "The All New Tenchi Muyo" GNs. But really, do you think there won't be some new Tenchi manga coming down the pike in a little while? Hopefully, the guy doing them now will be involved. His character designs are delightful!

I've just recently begun getting the No Need For Tenchi mangas since Viz has finally begun releasing them at the now-standard $9.99 price point. Do I need to finish that series before I start with Shin Tenchi? Are the two series related or is it yet another alternate universe?

I'm confused. Anime dazed

I have two volumes of "No Need for Tenchi* from Viz but I couldn't find any more. So there is more of that series?

Does Shin Tenchi = No Need for Tenchi?

>_> Any chance No Need for Tenchin was edited for content?

From what I remember, the two series are related, since they're still based off of the OVA, but there's no direct plot link between the two, so you should be safe in reading that one before finishing up No Need For Tenchi.

For the first question, yes, there is more to the "No Need For Tenchi" series. Ten more volumes to be precise.

And Shin Tenchi = All New Tenchi Muyo, which is a different series from "No Need For Tenchi". As to editing of No Need For Tenchi? I have no idea. It doesn't seem like they did, and I don't think I've heard of anyone complaining about it, but I don't really have anything to compare my manga to to see if it was edited or not, so it's a possibility.

Hmm, the two GN's I have are the No Need for Tenchi series. I'll look into this All new Tenchi Muyo thing. (And if there is more than two volumes of "No nneed for Tenchi" series as well...)

Thanks, that helped.

There is (or now was) 2 tenchi manga series by Hitoshi Okuda, published in english by VIZ. The first was the Tenchi Muyo: Ryo-Ohki = No Need For Tenchi series, which had 12 volumes. After vol. 12, the manga changed magazine in Japan, so it had to have a new name. So it changed to Shin Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki = All New Tenchi Muyo.
The Shin in this title is the 'new' not the 'true' like in the title of Kajishima's novels.

The 2 manga series went after the OVAs but a bit lighter tone. More on the characters, less on the Big Plot Known Only By Kajishima.

Yes the first series would sometimes touch on to some points from the OVAs or from Kajishima's novels, but the second series drifted away from that and became a universe all to their own. Some of the stories were quite good but now they seem to be using side characters to tell a story and some of the main characters are just there for fill. I've had a feeling that it might be running out of steam and that the end would be soon.

There was also the original American series published by Pioneer called "Tenchi Muyo!" which is probably why the first Viz comic was called "No Need For Tenchi".

I had all six issues of that book but I gave them to a friend for X-mas. There was never a GN of it.

IIRC, Volume 9 came out in Japan a few months ago so Vol.10 will be the last of the series...

I could't agree with you more. Like stretching an old rubber band...not to step on all the loyal fans out there. Sad
