Woah. Now that's one long article. And all on Ocean, of which I couldn't care less.
(I happen to know the writer too; Pokejedservo.)

In my opinion, Ocean gives out the least successful dubs in the entire anime industry.
Lots of people have been stamping down Ocean's works, especially those which have been acquired by Viz, etc.

I don't favor Ocean. Confused

GO Bang Zoom! & Animaze!!!!! Cool

In my opinion, Ocean has the best sounding voices. The acting and pronunciations could use some work (Gundam SEED and InuYasha), but when it comes time to "cast" a voice I've yet to or would prefer to hear in English (Kenshin manga), Ocean is on the top of my list.

I would've put Animaze/Bang Zoom!/ZRO Limit at the top, but I've come across more dubs of theirs I don't like (Kenshin, GTO, Tenjou Tenge, Gate Keepers, Samurai Girl Real Bout High School, Saber Marionette J Again, and Love Hina to name a few) as opposed to Ocean ones. But then again, I grew up on anime listening to Ocean's (better in the movies than FUNi will ever be) DBZ dub.

I'll have to give Paul Dobson a thumbs up for his portrayal as Wolfgang Krauser in Fatal Fury2, and that's coming from someone who does in general not care for dubs.

Mu only gripe is: where's Kishin Heidan? There were a couple of people who really sounded like they were having fun doing that show Smile

Ocean's a bit of a paradox for me.

On the one hand, their Westwood branch in Vancouver tends to put out really good dubs like "SoulTaker", "Galaxy Angel", "Master Keaton", "Infinite Ryvius", etc. It's when the dubs are made for television, like "Escaflowne", "InuYasha", and "Gundam SEED", where time restraints and such seriously dampen the quality, become less than stellar - and since these dubs get a lot more exposure, people tend to think these represent Ocean's overall quality when they don't. Still, on the whole the Westood branch of Ocean - which often employs some of my favorite voice actors like Brian Drummond, Scott McNeil, Lisa Ann Beley, and Paul Dobson - tend to be quite good, especially if the dub isn't made with any outside pressure.

On the other hand, there's the Blue Water branch in Calgary. Most of their dubs are absolutely horrid - the "Crest of the Stars" dub was painful - and they've done nothing to distinguish themselves outside of their flat performances. I hear they've been getting better (some people apparently like thier "Zeta Gundam" dub), but I'm still very reluctant to give them another try.

So in my opinion, Westood gets a big thumbs up from me while Blue Water gets a huge "meh".

The article appears to be focusing on the Westwood branch, not Blue Water. I can say I almost hate Blue Water, though G Gundam's dub was so-so, and everything else is on the brink of amateur. Still, that's something I can say I like just a little, which isn't the case at all for ADV, but let's not jump into that Anime catgrin + sweatdrop.

I liked Blue Water's GT dub... they certainly made a better job of it than FUNi did.

All censorship aside, I'd have to say that I prefer Ocean's DBZ dub over FUNi's. No offense to the great Christopher Sabat, but Scott McNeil and Brian Drummond were amazing as Piccolo and Vegeta. And Paul Dobson as Zarbon was much better than Sabat's portrayal. The Ocean dub gives him an Aussie accent, just like McNeil's Jeice (who was also played by Sabat in the uncut dub by FUNi). Laughing

Oh, and the music was much better. Faulconer's stuff is crap.

correction there on that....Falconer did the music for the Ocean Dubs of Season 1 and 2 of DBZ, if your refereing to there Movie dubs then hands down it's better.

Now for my two cents on the Ocean group espically Westwood Studios (most of my favorite dubs have come from that studio). I've enjoyed every one of there dubs save for one, Ranma 1/2, don't get me wrong the Ranma dub was ok just the voices grated on me for some of the characters.

Now for Blue Water, I've only liked one dub from them and that's Zeta Gundam (I know shocker). I'll agree most of them sound amatureish.

I know many fans dog Ocean Group (no pun ...) however, I've enjoyed their body of work very much. Over the years, I've seen the original (Nihon) anime series they've eventually dubbed and must opine their voice matching, scripting and direction is commensurate with the rest of the ADR industry.

Now... about the technical portion of that article on Ocean Group's history ... I don't know how old the author is, or what level of education he/she currently occupies, but I give the author an "A" for research and presentation, but a "D" for written content. Even a middle-school student SHOULD know basic grammer!

The article seriously suffered from lack of spell check, proofreading and grammatical ignorance. How sad considering the obvious time and effort the author devoted to researching the topic. Also disturbing is that an on-line publication would run an article like that without screening it through their OWN editorial staff.

My apologies for being the "Grammer Nazi" (it's a career by-product!). I'd just like the non-anime/manga loving people of the world respect us for the intelligent people we really are!

Worse than the spelling and grammar was the sheer, utter pointlessness of it all. It was a just poorly written and rambling list of Ocean dubs they liked or didn't like, with occasional pauses to ass-kiss. It paid no regard to chronology, made little mention of directors, and had pretty much no information to share.

I have Ocean dubs I love and Ocean dubs I hate, but this "article" was about as worth reading as a Narutard's post on an AOL anime forum.

The article was poorly written, but I do have the same admiration for the Ocean Group the writer seems to. Ian Corlett, for example, was my favorite dub Goku - the first season of DBZ had a good voice cast, at least. I have a lot of admiration for Scott McNeil, Paul Dobson, David Kaye, Kirby Morrow, Brian Drummond, and Saffron Henderson's work. Also noteworthy is Michael Kopsa, who did a pretty decent voice for Char Aznable in Mobile Suit Gundam.

Oh yeah, you just reminded me of Saffron Henderson. I liked her performance in Saber Marionette J. Who I thought was the best casted voice of the entire cast.

Scott McNeil is okay.
