Great summary of the year in manga; definitally the best I've seen so far, especially with breaking down the marketing trends.
I must have forgotten that PW included MBQ and Dramacon in their best of list. Personally, I'm a bit puzzled as to why. Dramacon was good, but there were a hell of alot better titles (manga and American) that they could have included, and MBQ was average at best. |

One correction needed for the "2005 Year in Review - Industry" article. At the end, it says Jake Forbes in that CMX section, but that should be "Jake Tarbox."

Yeah, that did seem a little fishy. I think Mew Mew was 2K5, right?

| As far as what happened in manga, the biggest thing that hit me was the Tenjho Tenge edits. I think CMX being tight lipped about it is a big mistake. It shows a lack of care for the fans, which definitley discredits the company. I'd be forgiving if they rereleased the title unedited (and I'd actually purchase it). I don't know much about the business side of manga, but I would think that having a title do poorly is a big financial blow and a company would do what they could to make the title a seller if the problem was obvious like in this case. But I guess CMX, or better yet DC, is doing well enough to where they don't really care. Because of that my manga wallet goes to other distributors. |

| I want to say that I really enjoyed these reviews and I think everybody did a great job on them. Just one technical thing I want to point out in the anime review section. Unlike Fullmetal Alchemist, the "full metal" in Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu is two separate words. Other than that I didn't notice any errors. Great job! |

But is the pain great enough for Khan and the board to change their ways. Also will a Japanese studio want to risk giving a title to them if they obstinately continue to want to slice and dice their properties to fit a market the Japanese studios never intended it to fit, causing a huge flop of potential overseas sales like "One Piece"? Sure they will continue but I have a feeling it will not be with a new anime and manga based title too soon.  |

Media Play only had something in the range of 50-70 stores, this article needs to reflect that MusicLand filed for bankruptcy - a big suprise to me, concerning the fact that I haven't seen a single news item stating that MusicLand had filed for bankruptcy and is closing MediaPlay, Suncoast and Sam Goody.
It was mentioned last month that MusicLand is only closing the MediaPlay stores.
In fact, that part about MusicLand/MediaPlay isn't even accurate. I think the person confused MediaPlay with MusicLand and somehow pulled 1000 out of the air for the number of stores. |

I didn't pull it out of the air; a source close to the whole thing told me that the chain was bankrupt and would be shuttering all its stores. I was inclined to believe them.
But I'll go with the public announcement and change it. |

But wasn't Suncoast and perhaps SamGoody profitable? Thats what I was reading. |

| As of the last article i saw, Suncoast was profitable while sam goody and mediaplay were not due to the bad markets for cds and books at the moment. Of course if the whole chain is in dire straights it doesn't matter if Suncoast is making a profit unless someone wants to buy just that part of the chain. |

| No surprises here, despite seeming to be a good year on the surface there's been a lot of turbulence. I've really enjoyed the influx of titles these past years and I hope the negative impact isn't too major. The industry has been skyrocketing and it was only a matter of time before it levelled off and maybe even dipped a bit, just how much that drop off is remains to be seen and depends on several different things such as fanbase growth and the influence of piracy. |

| Just as an FYI regarding Theron's statement that there's been no word on the release of the 3rd Tenchi OAV's next disc - Funimation announced on their Tenchi site that the second DVD will come out on September 13th and the third is due out on November 7th. |

Yeah, that was just announced this week, so I didn't have a chance to update. (My piece was turned in more than a week ago.)
Another comment I'd add: from what ADV said at a 'con I attended this past weekend, their emphasis on thinpaks has been as much a shelf space issue as anything, and they're looking seriously at releasing individual volumes in thinpak cases, too. The main barrier to that right now is that a couple of major retail chains have theft prevention issues with such packaging. They are also considering reprinting thinpak-sized versions of the cover on its back side for do-it-yourselfers. |
