Why the aliens? Why the sex change? It gets the plot moving, but a simpler approach would have been to just start Hazumu off as a girl.

But that would change the entire premise. I agree that the alien part is rather stupid, but I really can't see another way for Hazumu to accidentally become a girl.

Seconded. Mind that intricate relationships don't exist just between Hazumu and Yasuna, but with Tomari and Asuta as well, especially for the former. If Hazumu started as a girl, their existences would become both weird and unimportant, and Kasimasi would be just another shoujo-ai title.

So, is Zac actually writing RTO now? Or is it a fill-in or a misprint?

And as a warning to anyone who is interested in School Rumble, Zac said, "if you're expecting it to evolve into romance, that'll have to wait." That will never happen. But there is much more hilarity, especially as the focus moves away from TenmaxKarasuma. In a way, it's the lack of romance that keeps it going. I highly recommend School Rumble, but if it doesn't really grab you right away, you may not like it.

I'd say it's a misprint. Happened to me once. Anime smallmouth + sweatdrop The writing style is clearly Carlo's, not Zac's.

Mis-print, the article is Carlo's.

I've been meaning to read the School Rumble manga because I've heard so much about it. I need something that's really funny, and I hope this would hit the spot. Did the TV series get licensed yet? How does that compare to the manga?

By the way, Carlo, did you get a chance to check out the "Lupin the 3rd: World's Most Wanted" manga?

I bought mine from Akadot at Anime Expo last year; they've got the 2006-2007 edition already available for special order at the site.

Dunno if the TV is licensed yet... but from the first few episodes I've seen, it's almost an exact re-enactment of the manga. Some of the stories are in a different order but it's basically the manga with color and movement.

1)The artwork in the manga might disapoint a bit since it doesn't compare with the TV series. Other than that, the TV series/OVA are pretty much exactly the same plot wise.

2) After 11+ volumes, I still haven't gotten bored of the silliness quite yet. It's seriously funny stuff. But then again, since I haven't seen Del Rey's translation I can't tell you whether the humor/dialouge was butchered in the localization/translation.

If the TV series has been licensed, there hasn't been an announcement about it. Hopefully, it will if the manga does well. The anime is pretty much the manga with color and animation. The main series skipped over some of the side chapters, but the OVA filled in a few holes. There's supposed to be a new TV series this spring.

Well since its Del-Rey we can expect there to be minimal to no localization and butchering of humour. Having read Del-Rey's Tsubasa, XXholic, and Genshiken Im confident that they will remain as close to the original meanings as possible. Very Happy

Anyways Ill probably order the first two volumes today, didn't think they were being released yet. Shocked

I already mentioned in the review that the translation comes out decently, but I'll elaborate:

All the Japanese wordplay is explained thoroughly in the translation notes (with reference to the original dialogue) and, where possible, converted to an English equivalent that accomplishes the same effect. For example, where Tenma keeps dodging the word "suki," she instead comes up with variations on words that start with "lo" because she can't say "love."

While some might still call that butchering, I see it as more of a careful surgical operation. It's still better than erasing the joke entirely, or translating directly but not explaining anything.

Yeah, people seem to over-react to this sort of thing and atomatically accuse it of being an American bastardization. Personally, I don't want to be looking to the back of the book every two pages for the culteral reference. So far Del Rey has been good in this aspect, so I'm curious to see if School Rumble is solid adaptation like you said.
