Heh, well I guess it's not all that bad in Iraq after all.

OK, I'm terrible, sorry.

Water truck donated by Japan, featuring Captain Tsubasa (aka Captain Majed):

ah nice, this is a good thing, not for the sake of just advertising japanese culture, but spurring cultural development. the effects are noticable here, heck even israel had an anime convention.

not to get political, but i lov emy theory. crime and terroism are forms of poor artistic expression for lack of better worthwhile alternatives. i'll take anime over war anyday and so may they.

say this has not been posted here, someone might look into it, but Maria sama ga miteru is airing on tv in the Philipines! haha that's even mor ebizarre than the Maxim magazines flying off the shelves in India (which happened)

Well, it's a good show. And I hear that Tsubasa's soccer themes are popular in the Arab region where soccer is a popular passtime. I say go for it.

This is a bit misleading actually. Captain Tsubasa has long since been dubbed into arabic as Captain Majid. Heck, I watched most of the series. We've had arabic dubbed anime for over two decades on our channels. Even Iraqi Tv, under Saddam Hussein's rule, regularly showed anime.
Can someone explain to me how the Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs would be able to redub and then donate an anime if the language release rights are owned by someone else?

I didn't think I'd be able to find an answer, but what do you know:

A previous series showing Tsubasa's childhood was aired in the Middle East under the title Captain Majid, creating many Tsubasa fans there.

I understand Iraq was a fairly major center for Arabic anime dubbing in the 1970s.

Perhaps they are dubbing the J or the Road to 2002 series. I'd rather the J series over the 2002 series myself, but that's personal opinion. Let's see if more anime gets dubbed to arabic (wonders what anime sounds like in that language O_o').

Good for them, it's a good anime that more americans should try out (just avoid the 2002 series cuse it kinda sucks). It won't teach you much about soccer, but you'll have a heck of a good time.

I used to watch Captain Tsubasa in Arabic when I was a little girl so I've always known this series as Captain Maged. I also watched it in French: Olive et Tom and it still playing in France because it's the most popular series of all the football series!

When I was in Israel last summer they were actually playing Howl's Moving Castle in 13 or so different theaters in the country with showings in both Hebrew and in Japanese with Hebrew subtitles. Compare that to my state of Minnesota, which has about three times as much landmass (though probably about half the population) of Israel, were we had one theater showing it and only in English. And we tend to be one of the places that more often then not shows Anime when it's in theaters around the country.

ya there has been alot of great Iraqy VAs working with other from the Gulf area
and honestly the dubbing business back then was much more serious than the what they do nowdays. even though there lacked the technology

Road to 2002 has been allready dubbed to arabic and currently being aired in Space Toon..

i heard there are alot of OVAs but the problem is that Arabs do not dub short series or OVAs (i dunno why)

anyways. it is really great gesture but Captain Tsubasa is the least that iraqies need..

btw. Captain Tsubasa is really underated

hey hey, i think your gettin the wrong idea , maybe whatched too much CNN? people still live there and have daily lifes. its not some kinda empty desert that every one is deing in it and blowing up as soon as they walk outta of their home.

I watched captin tsubasa in Farsi (persian) dub. it is really popular in middle east since it is about football. but yea, since it is for a very general audiance they WILL have too remove all cultural refrence... maybe even edit it a bit and have it more fit to their own culture.

Yeah, gone are the days of Grendaizer and Sasuke where the characters kept their original names and the story lines were more or less kept intact. With the way 'Venus' and other studios brutalize animes (E.g. Robin Hood, Nadia) how is anyone supposed to enjoy arabic dubs anymore?
